I'm not bashing 1C for the blackout on SoW, I'm sure they have good reasons, but the PR leading up to Oblivion was great! Team diaries, lots of screenshots, and a new movie for the last 7 days before release! And to what effect? I stood in line to get my copy the very first day!

With SoW it feels like it will be absolute silence until one day we just see it on the shelves! I can hear it on the Futureshop PA now.... "Clean up on aisle 5, another customer wet their pants. WTH is going on there?"

Incidently, I remember expecting Oblivion and SoW to release around the same time and wondering how the heck I'd play both at the same time. Little did I know I'd have a good 2+ year gap between them!

And remember how hard Oblivion was on systems when it was released?

By the tine SoW is released you'll be able to get Oblivion in the bargain bin and it'll run on a decent mid-range system that's over a year old. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Absolutely! The PR for Oblivion was BRILLIANT. They had people foaming at the mouth for it, including me! They would tease and tease, releasing a little bit here and a little bit there. Just enough to keep people interested, and wanting more! That countdown was insane http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif Stuff like that keeps folks up at night, and when you CAN sleep, you DREAM about the day you can pick up your reserved copy! They did one GREAT job hyping that game up...and it is a good game, and deserved all the hype. Morrowind was good as well, and had everyone guessing as to how great Oblivion was going to be. I could go on and on about this.
Bottom line is Il2 is great, we all can imagine how much better SoW:BoB is going to be. Do what Bethesda Softworks did, which was a fantastic move on their part. It sold a LOT of copies. Did you see how much those coins were going for on Ebay at the time? INSANE!!!!!!

Thunderbolt, not sure what you mean. I'm still playing Oblivion on an AthlonXP 3200+ with Radeon 9800 Pro from 2003, and it runs excellent! Beautiful and great frame rates, and I fully expected to have to upgrade my system.

Chocktaw I agree. Outside of IL2, Oblivion is still the best game I've ever played. It was everything it promised and more.

well the marketing of the IL2 series has never been great.
The marketing of SOW-BOB is the worst that I have ever seen bar none. Put out vids and screenies so people can generate buzz!

I have been trying to get a tee shirt and coffee mug for seven years!

Well, on "other" forums, there's discussion about protecting "trade secrets" from competing flight-sim developers posing to release their products around the same time as SoW is scheduled. Thus giving too much away would be counterproductive if the competition were able to emulate some things even marginally.

How true that is, I couldn't say as I'm certainly not on the inside. It's one of the only reasons I can logically comprehend for such a stealthy approach to a game release though. Either that, or things aren't going so well, but who knows? Those that do aren't saying.

I don't usually flaunt my nerdiness, but even I would wear an IL-2 t-shirt! What ever happened to those IL-2 keyrings they were giving out at ebgames?

How about a nice Polo with an Il2 embroidered Logo on it.

<bump>

Funny to look back and see that nothing has changed. Good think Black Shark and Rise of Flight were released to keep me from going insane! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Also discovering a new love for IL-2 lately on the Warbirds of Prey server.

yes Oblivion is awesome and what Bethesda's PR did was great

with Fallout 3 was the same

anyway I'm still playing Oblivion with full DLC's OOO, plus other addons (Ivellon, Diablo, etc) and also Fallout, full, DLC's with some awesome addons of Assault Rifles (contemporary)

So, can't wait for 4.09m and other stuff from TD

To be honest Maddox games are going to have to pull something really special out of the bag to beat some of the great looking (and sounding!) mods for IL2 lately.

I have no doubt that they wil far surpass it, but I feel that the mods raised the bar somewhat.

Remember that this SOW engine has to be rock solid as its the basis for many games. I have no doubt that if they take their time and make it rock solid, it will be licenced like the Quake and Unreal engines and makes Maddox some good money.

The Il2 engine has been fantastic, and it was only designed as a single plane simulator engine, look at it now! The SOW engine has been built with the future in mind.

I persomally am astounded at how dood the IL2 engine looks today. Isnt it 8-9 years old now? Check out other games that appeared in 2001 compared to Il2.

Dues Ex
Quake 3
Halflife
Thief Op flashpoint

Il2 still looks incredible next to these games.

I'm curious according to Russian law how long does someone/something (SOW) have to be missing to be considered legally dead? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think that the relative silence surrounding SoW is because (and implies that) it's still several months away at the VERY least. I'm sure that when the release date is close there will be quite a bit of info coming out of the developers. For IL-2's big expansion packs, years ago, the developer always did a half-decent job of providing news and screenshots in advance of the release.

Personally, I've mentally filed SoW away as something that I will see, one day, in the fairly distant future... I don't have high hopes of playing it any time very soon. If it does come out next year I'll be pleasantly surprised but I'd rather expect nothing and avoid disappointment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think you're right, Fox. Back in 2008 I still believed that SoW could be released at any time. Now I know better and the silence makes sense.

You can't promote a product for years and not release it! You'd only waste money and burn enthusiasm. Better not to say anything at all.

Still, when it comes close I'm looking forward to the hype and commotion and much as the actual release. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Morrowind was the reason I got Oblivion. And that only the 2nd year after release due to my limited hardware.
I never got into the forums or internet buildup and it never made a difference to me either.

Same way, IL2 is why I want to get SoW and hope that I will be ready to upgrade in time for the release.

Hype is for people who pay attention to such things.

The "marketing" activities around SoW:BoB reminds me mostly of those around Duke Nukem 3D more than anything.

Exactly what and how would competitors steal if a little more grease was poured on the target market at this stage? I don't get it.

1C: -You'll love this, we're gonna have dynamic weather including such-and-such. Look at these new pretty screens how the cloud formations develop.
Competitor: -OMFG we're gonna haxx0r teh pix and make our own dynamic wheather! ROFL!!!11 Oh wait, we still need to develop it...

1C: -Look how faithfully we modelled aerodynamics within the envelope of the Emil. It closely follows these secrut intelligence docs from 1940 that we managed to dig up and restore from the sewer sludge below Whitehall with the help of faithful forum posters in wetsuits.
Competitor: -Woot! We're gonna abandon our best selling Quake clone series and go into the WWII combat flight sim niche market instead! FTW!

1C: Hey guys, you wanna buy a license? This is the most advanced prop sim engine you'll find, you know.
Competitors: ZZzzzZzzZzZ...
1C: Umm... what about you guys over at DCS then?
DCS: Yeeeehaaawww! Can't hear you over my A-10 jet engines! Come again?

Whine, anyone? Why yes, I'll have some please:

One of my theories is that the compute power required to effectively utilities the SoW:BoB engine is beyond the capabilities of currently available desktop processors, so the longer they draw out it's release, the better the chances are that the available desktop CPUs will be able to run it acceptably well.

IMO Oblivion rocks...it's becoming the IL-2 of RPGs. I still play it here and there; it nice to have all the sliders cranked up along with 8xAA.

Too funny and too real. Which really begs the question to be asked. Who exactly is Oleg's competition? He really hasn't had any in years so why the big secret?

I highly doubt that considering the computing power of the latest CPU's and newer GPU's released, there's always a chance of that but to with hold releasing a product because of that Oleg would be slitting his throat financially. Besides just turn down the CPU sucking settings like ground detail, vehicles and infantry, complex shadows ect. The only way it sucks is if the coding is really bad ex.. crysis.

I may be treading on thin ice by saying this but I am quite certain that SoW will not replace IL2 on my hard drive for a very long time. I am sure SoW will be a wonderful platform on which they will build the heir to the throne but with the vast and furious effort being put forth by the modding community the content will seem anemic when compared to where IL2 stands today.

I mean look at this -----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...qLZQ&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1MsaF8qLZQ&feature=related)

The video has some amped up post processing bloom effects but thats pretty close to what my game looks like today.

I think it may be better for them to manage expectations a bit. Have you ever gone to a see a movie that has been out a long time and your heard all your friends talk about how great that movie is. Then you go see it and you think PPFFFFT it was good but not that good. As opposed to seeing a great movie that you knew nothing about before you stepped into the theater? Expectations, they do strange things to our perceptions.

So while I will certainly purchase BoB SOW as soon as hits the streets. I feel no sense of anticipation. Nor do I lament the fact that 1C's marketing department hasn't generated it. I dont expect to be wow'ed by SoW out of the box so I know I wont be disappointed. Who knows I could be wrong and they will pull off the next block buster.

I can tell ya one thing though, You're going to see a bunch of people getting whipped into a frenzy before the release and exploding all over the boards the next day saying stuff like "We waited 5 years for this!?!" and I will just sit back and eat my popcorn.
