'Random' .50 rounds might be the result of flying too close to a bomber formation, where single guns might be generally directed at you.

On the other hand, being the recipient of a 'specific' application of a one second burst from six of these heavy machine guns mounted in a fighter striking the same area of that 109 would have resulted in an after action photograph of a smoking hole in the ground, sans grinning pilot.

I second Ploughman's estimation of your charactor.

Total BS. Just look at the large amount of fighter guncam footage to see how the .50cals lite FW's and BF's on fire, blow wings and tails off etc... That is way more powerful than some random fake pictures. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

and to the other guys.. I NEVER mentioned in the .50 cal picture that those holes were from a 1 SEC BURST FROM 6 .50 CALS FROM 150m DEAD 6" WITH ALL GUNS CONVERGED @ 150m.. did I?

ALL are examples of single hits with guns of different calibers, I wasn't making fun of you .50 cal cryboys, just posted some examples of SINGLE hits with diferente weapons.. and although I don't have evidence that the damage in the other pictures are from 20mm, or 30mm guns, they look pretty obvious that the damage belong to large caliber weapons.

The pictures look scanned from a book or something, I had them sitting in my HD for a long time and just decided to post them.

Any of you guys have some guncam footage of 20mm or 30mm guns pointing and hitting another airplane? Specially 30mm.

Thanks guys..

All of these pictures are fascinating but they don't accurately convey anything.

The Bf109 shot, as pointed out, appears to not be the result of fighter to fighter combat that we're all so concerned with.

The Blenhiem and Spitfire shots were conducted by placing the MK108 shell *inside* the fuselage to simulate a worst case/best case (depends on your perspective) scenario for the Spitfire and Blenhiem. Obviously a MK108 shell that detonates directly inside of the target will be devastating...how often that happens is another issue altogether.

So are we talking about neat pictures here or are we trying to stoke some fires? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Good question m8ee...

I just thought the pics were cool (didn't know the french picture would offend some ppl here I apologize)

Seems like people get pirsed off when someone posts ".50 cal offensive material" here.

And yeah.. probably those exploded plane pictures were 30mm rounds placed inside. place a single .50 cal round inside and explode it.. whait a minute.. they don;t explode... ok... ignite it.. I doubt it would take the same effect as that 30mm round.

AGAIN.. I'M TALKING ABOUT SINLGE ROUNDS.
And.. AGAIN.. I just thought the damage pictures were cool so I posted them.

No .50 cal flaming intended.. Honest
Thanks...

One big problem with your comparisons. The 108 and 20mm spit pictures are of a broadside hit (aqua perpendicular) where as the 109 .50 cal shots are from near glancing (parallel).

The explosive rounds have to be time right, glancing blows tended to cause them to detonate too soon (before inside the body) or too late (passed through the body) thus losing allot of the effect. From that spit shot it looks like it was a little premature, in that you can see the blast effects on the outside around the entry point. To get the effect you see in those two pictures it has to explode while inside the body. Structural forces were not design to handle forces from inside pushing out, they were designed to handle forces from the outside pushing in.

They explosive stuff worked better in a perpendicular shot, but, how many dog fights result in a broad side shot? Not many.

Also one thing about .50 cal hits. Its not the entry wound that matters, but what it does UNDER the skin that really makes it count! Those 2 hits could of hit the radiator under the wings easy. Also .50's typically come in packs of 6 or 8 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif What you see is a glancing blow. You never see aircraft that returned home with 30+ .50 cal hits, now do you? Those dont return home to have there photo's taken.

Tell you what; I'll stop being annoyed with examples of damage comparisons from a single round when you show me a WWII Axis fighter with at least six internally mounted cannon that regularly engaged other fighters with any success.

Until then, we'll have to expect a strong response whenever we compare apples to pumpkins, particularly late-war pumpkins that saw relatively limited use.

cheers

We just had a long thread about that where we actually did not just flame each other. Most people agreed that a .50 cal COULD enter the LARGE vents in the back of a Tiger and put a hole into the radiator. Not very likley mind you, but I did a rough calculation that on a strafing run by a P-47 about 6 bullets would enter the vents. From there, its impossible to calculate but 1 of those 6 could bounce into the unprotected radiator.

Disable yes. Distroy? Not very likley.

Mmm, how can you tell that? Hopefully not because someone wrote that on there boards? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Williams&Gustin say on page 42 of "Flying Guns of WW2":
"The 30 mm HEI M-Geschoss, fired from an MK 108, was also tested. Unsurprisingly, ten rounds fired at a Spitfire fuselage resulted in score of three immediately lethal, seven probably lethal. Eleven rounds fired at a Blenheim achieved the same results, plus one doubtful."

Hoflich, cant you see that this forum is full of LW whinners? Many many blue pilots has left the game. So they wont support you here any more. And haven't you heard that LW has been tampered to balance the game? Remember, it's only a "game". Dont take it too serious.
