...this wing belongs to.

I found it at a scrap metal dealer in Großraming (Austria). I guess it was found somewhere in the nearby mountains. My grandparents told me that US bombers flew over this region when they where heading for Steyr and they told me that they whitnessed several bombers getting downed by flak or german fighters. Thats all I know about this wing. So, what plane does it belong to?

Yes, droptanks. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's not a P47, I don't think. Note the relative size and position of the star and bars as well as the lack of gun barrels or ports for that matter. It suggest that what we have here is only the end fragment of the wing, not the majority of it. I'm willing to bet it's the wing of a bomber. I'm thinking it's a B17.

Yep, definitely viermot, but seems more like B-24 to me.

Bomber for sure.....What a waste though. might make a better coffe table.

Yeah, on second thought, I will agree. The star and bars is too close to the edge on the B17. In the posted picture, the insignia is one "panel" away from the edge of the wing. In the B17, it seems too close. In the B24, on the other hand, it seems to be just about right.

With very little doubt, it's a B-24 wing..

it's waaay too large to belong to a fighter and waaay too narrow aswell...

only wingprofile really matching that is the Davis wing of the B-24

My thinking was initially a Maurader flying up from Italy.

Looking at the maps you could be right .

http://www.mamilade.at/map/map.1_3_4400.jpg

Steyr is north from Großraming. Therefore it sounds reasonable that the planes came from the south (Italy).

It's a B-17 left wing MINUS the flaps and aileron.

Personally I'm still with the B24 camp, the wing does seem to narrow for a B17 and the tip planform is too curved. In fact, I'd lay down money that this wing is not from a B17(I know that the aileron's missing, it's still not a B17 wing though)! As regards the Marauder theory, I may be wrong but there appear to be too many rivet lines in the tip for it to be one of them so I'm sticking to the B24 idea. As regards the suggestion it's from a P47, no way. On another note, I wonder what happened to the crew....

Note the diagonal rivet line toward the leading edge of the wing tip. Among the candidates, this is unique to the B-24.

It is positively a B-24. Look at the rounded tip section. Note that the missing aileron stops at the tip section. On a B-17 the aileron cuts a notch into the similar part of the wing. While this is also the case with the B-26, the Marauder had a landing light in the leading edge of the left wing. The panel/rivet lines help to give it away.

Is the B-25 also a possibility? (don't know if they flew there).

EnsignKarl1
06-30-2005, 12:08 PM
The B-25 is a possibility, but also has a distinctive landing light in the left wing that based on the star/bar should be visible.

PlaneEater

You're all assuming that's the top of the left wing.

Notice how the tip is white, but chipping away to the primer / corroded metal beneath. On the main section, there are a few patches of white, but most of it has chipped away.

I think it's the bottom of the right wing. That puts the B-26 and the B-25 back in the running.

My guess is one of those two.

I'm afraid my girlfriend will not be happy with this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif .

Another thing:

My grandparents have told me a quite funny anecdote:
A bombercrew had to crash land somewhere in the "Ennstal" (thats how the region around Steyr,Großraming etc. is called). The crash site was several kilometers away from the next town. When a patrol of the Wehrmacht came by to examine the crashed plane the bombercrew took the soldiers as prisoners. Then they went to the next town, the german soldiers with their hands to the air marching in front of them.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif When they arrived in the town the allied soldiers surrendered to the local police.
http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I guess that was a smart idea. Far away from the next town the germans could have done everything to the allied crew...
