Hello!

Whenever I fly as a gunner on a bomber, I have very little luck in destroying enemy aircraft. Usually, I run out of ammo after killing one enemy. I can only kill more than one if I turn down time compression to .5 or lower.

Do you have tips for me? Or links to a guide with tips?

Thank you!!!

Practice will serve you best.

For a start select 12,7mm defensive machine gun....or even better G4M tail gun (20mm).

To be successful as machine gunner on board the bomber, pilot needs to assist you too.......but that's double edged sword really.
Because he need to fly as steady as possible in order to assist your gunnery, but of course if he flies steady enemy fighter will have a sitting duck, so you better be VERY accurate.

Don't worry, not all is lost......I'll make you a few tracks with my defensive gunnery in bomber, although I'm not some example to be followed I still have a trick or twohttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I avoid wasting ammo on fighter that is far away (more than 400-500m) especially if my gun is 7,62mm. It practically doesn't have any effecthttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
Also never shoot in hard deflection you will miss......exception is when fighter overshoots you then overfly you very close - try to rake his belly then.

But in the end it all boils down to experience.

BTW do you fly offline or online? (for tracks)

I fly offline for now, because I do not yet have a joystick.

I have not played IL-2 for many years... I forget: can you play as a gunner online? That would be fun! To have a human pilot, instead of AI. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ok, I will try waiting until they come closer.

Thank you!!

Thank you!! </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Not a prob mate......it's very hard to do a good job vs ACE Ai fighters they are accurate as death (if you do not evade).
Your Ai pilot will do fairly poor job, so unless you do not manage both pilot and gunner you will die a lot.

Online it's fun! When two players (several players cannot fly in the same aircraft online in dogfight maps only in COOPs) are flying together one as pilot one as rear gunner it's really good since they can do excellent coordinated job!

The best defensive tactic vs Ai online is to maintain few Gs in flat turn (it doesn't matter how ridiculous this sounds) vs enemy fighters, they will come close and it's basically a turkey shot for rear gunner.

Fighting humans online is another matter tho....it's usually harder than vs Ai fighters.

That is a little disappointing that it will only work on COOP servers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

But I will look for some! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have a habit of taking gunner places (if available) in COOPs.
I always ask pilot and if he doesn't mind I man the gunner position....so far no one complained....muchhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And yes here is one close call, me manning the Ju-88 rear machine gun vs diving Spitfire V.
I had luck there, but if it was Yak or LaGG instead of that Spitfire I would be dead as they are closest thing to indestructible when engine DM is in question.

One time I flew in an online coop as a tail gunner for some dude. We were in a SBD navy dive bomber and I shot down 5 Zeros, three of which were piloted by humans and I got credit for four of them. Would have got credit for all five but we were shot down by ground fire and hit the deck before the last Zero I flamed went it. It was fun except for getting killed by gound fire!! Keep practicing, you'll get better.
