If I'm not mistaken pre 1947, all air assets in the USA belonged to the US Army, US Navy and the US Marine Corp. USAAF stands for United Stated Army Air Force and it was a branch of the US Army until 1947, then it became its own seperate force (United States Air Force or USAF). The Japanese had a similar setup, before and during WW2 all their aircraft belonged to either the Army (IJA) or the Navy (IJN), Post WW2 the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF)was formed.
P.S. Many happy returns to the USAF from us Brits http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif.

Here in Honolulu, the Thunderbirds were on hand for the USAF's 60th. Played hooky with my son to check them out buzzing my favorite surf spots:

Didn't they already have a big airshow at Nellis?
My dad was in the occupation force running radar and processing recce pix of Korea on Kyushu when they became the USAF. THere was a mix of uniform and rank types afterwards, as they didn't have enough funding to completely replace everything with the old Army standards. They did paint USAF on the P-51s, A-26s, and P-61s at his base pretty quickly.

A fine outfit. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Nellis AFB here in Las Vegas holds an annual Air Show called "Aviation Nation"...it is always held in early November.

Note: Are there any IL2 hobbyists living in the Vegas/Nellis area besides me? Anyone going to the Air Show? I go every year of course, me being a retired USAF type guy
