Hey guys,

Lol,

I just found a video on youtube showing a Video Game known as The First Templar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XgRNlM8_hU&p=31F3831FDE73F05F&playnext=1).

A lot of people are thinking this an Assassin's Creed Rip-Off, which it sort of looks like, especially at 1:55, where you'll be saying 'WTF is he doing?' like me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

What do you guys think?

I'm not sure what to think of it... i just can't get over that 1:55... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

It doesn't look good if you ask me. I won't be expecting anything. And seriously, the terms "Templar" and "Hero" don't mix... Of course that is subjective, and they were probably heroes for Christian fundamentalists...

that was interesting... I'm pretty sure there's a "The First Templar" book as well (about a kid) but don't quote me on it

@Scythe, cas and prime: Don't just quote me on it to annoy me, srsly

If you're familiar with the works of Anton LaVey you'll understand the other side of the templars. Read up on the ceremony of the stifling air or "L'Air Epais".

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">
The Templars had been exposed to the dualistic concepts of the yezdis in the Near East. They had seen pride glorified and life praised as never before, when they entered the courtyard of the serpent and the sanctuary of the peacock </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The templars only started off christian. They ended up so un-christian that the church had them executed on a rather famous day: Friday 13th.

maybe, I just glanced at it a year or so ago in Readings and this made me think of it

(I've borrowed it from my local library, could the "secret that could ruin the Catholic Church" be like the Da Vinci Code? Jesus wasn't real)

(I don't believe in anything, I'm not saying Jesus isn't real, I'm just stating the plot)

If you look at the templars historically, the official reason for executing them was heresy. They did acquire a whole pile of wealth and did come to be less spiritual over time.

In my book, the church was the bad guy there - after all, executing people for having lots of money and not following your religion is rather nasty isn't it?

The Satanic Rituals by Anton LaVey
Worth a read even if you aren't a practicing Satanist, same for all his work - the man was a genius who did his research.

Curse the Templars for our rotten luck on that one certain day that only occurs twice or so a year http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I note Kalypso are the manufacturers. So badly burned by their appalling 'MUD-TV' (published with a memory hole they never patched, despite patching other minor gameplay issues) that I'm inclined to conclude this game will be similarly doomed before its even released.

I wouldn't take anything a showman like Anton LeVey had to say seriously. Occultist accounts of Templar lore bear 5% relation to historical reality and 95% to their own invention and / or wishful thinking.

After the Crusades, the Templars were just arrogant bankers with unprecidented Papal privileges. Unsurprising a bankrupt French king jealous of their wealth and power would do all he could to defame, steal from and destroy them. He went on to paint the Pope himself as a demon-conjuring sorcerer a few years afterwards!

What's so ripoff about it? The "Leap of Faith" is nothing more how someone really cool is jumping from a building. Of you call this game a ripoff you can also call AC a ripoff because it's a freeroam game like GTA.

Umm, didn't they find some files that were just stored wrong in the vatican?

I think they did, and now the church has pardoned the templars and corrected the history.

Ooh, a game about a zealous order of religious Christians! Weren't they involved in multiple accounts of inhumane genocide, rape, murder, pillaging, and being overall jerks? Awesome, way to **** off all the non-Christians and Historians in the gaming community devs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif Next up: A game about how the Nazi's "rescued" the Spear of Destiny from the French!

If you're going to criticise someone at least spell their name properly: LaVey

And what he did was label them as heretics.
That arrogance was not exactly humble and christian was it?

Philip the Fair couldn't have cared less if the Templars were saints or sinners - he just wanted their money. See Cohn's 'Europe's Inner Demons' for a forensic dissection of the heresy charges levelled against them ('Baphomet', etc), which you might then measure the worth of Mr. LaVey's no doubt highly informed opinions on the matter up against.

Yeah, desptie what the AC series says, the Templars weren't any more evil than several other medieval christian/knighly orders. They just got too powerful for their own good. They just made too much money. So the king of France had them destroyed them-burned most of them at the stake. Then he took their money.

I'll add it to my to-read list, but one thing I should point out about LaVey is that he was very open about mixing up fact and fantasy. In his books, the texts of the rituals themselves are mostly fantasy (no kids, belial, leviathan, lucifer and satan are not actually going to appear to you except in your head), but the descriptions given around them are for the most part accurate.

The text introducing the background for "the stifling air" is correct that the templars were indeed charged with heresy. Maybe it is inaccurate on whether they entered the sanctuary of the peacock or not, but it isn't completely relevant to the meaning of the work I was referencing. The satanic rituals is a practical "how to" for Satanic ritual - a tradition that is based upon using symbolism to evoke powerful emotions using theatrical techniques.

The Templars were dissolved because King Phillip Something of France wanted to free himself of his debts to them. Also, a number of other people wanted the Templars gone, because they were becoming very rich and powerful, and no king could control or bribe them, since they answered only to the Pope.
