I know that in the A6M Zero (the early variants at least) it was not possible to fire machine guns and cannons at the same time but what about other aircraft with similarly mixed armament? Was the situation the same in the Bf-109, Spitfire etc?

Not sure on other types but the Spitfires had a trigger that if you pressed it forward, the cannons would operate, if you pressed it back then the machine guns would operate and if you pressed it in all the way then both would work.

Fairly simple yet effective.

german fighters had two fire triggers on their stick - one for the thumb , one for the forefinger.
in a 109 the thunb fired the canon, the forefinger the machineguns.

It was next to impossible to hit both with mg and (low velocity) 20mm projectiles in case of early Zeros, but I never heard of impossibility of firing both pairs of weapons http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Me too...although I also use the second stage of the X-52's trigger as a "ALL GUNS" option so if I want that I don't have to strain my hand to get all the bloody buttons at the same time. Particularly if its a guns and rockets or guns and bombs attack.

That's the one awesome feature of the Cougar: 2Step Trigger. Press it halfway and fire MGs, fully pulled both or cannons. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

I know it sounds rediculous but my enjoyment of the game, once I got used to the new stick, went up quite a bit when I got the X-52. I needed a new stick so it was out of necessity but it was worth the $150 Canadian I spent on it. The two stage trigger, the multiple hat switches, and the throttle boost enjoyment so much. The throttle you really have to try...its hard to get used to but once you get used to it you wonder why you never had one before. Pushing the throttle forward rather than just a mini slider is just such an impressive experience.

That was the case AFAIK. Located on the end (or top) of the throttle was a switch with two options. The pilot could select machine guns OR cannons. No 3rd option.
