It is kind of redundant to keep this and another forum going for essentially one flight sim.
I am glad it is here though, just for nostalgia's sake, it is just about all that is left of the original IL2 for newcomers to see.

That old IL*2 insignia and picture at the top, "the sim used to revolve around that plane?, that is odd"...those introduced during AEP and later might think...
I still remember my first install and start-up of IL2, and the thrill of watching the lumbering Sturmoviks in the intro-track doing their job. And the first mission I flew was the interception of the IL2s in a 109g6late over that lake...the challenge then was just to take off without crashing.

And this is still a place for the eastern/european front junkies to hang-out.

Are there those who never visit it? Those who stay in the PF forum and have wrote this off as passe? And are there those who never visit the PF forum?

If it disappears someday I will know time has moved on again, and I will miss it.

The Pacific Fighters forum is a necessity because the sim can be stand-alone

The general discussion forum is a necessity because some folks still play Il2 even though FB is more popular

Some folks talk about FW 190s in the PF forum and it's confusing, but that's an issue with players, not the validity of this forum

I agree, Nice post subject http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i certainly enjoy a regular visit here as much as the next bloke. Perish the thought of it being destroyed. I see no need to merge the two, i find that both have very different subject matter, thast why i look in both, this one just appeals to me more http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh I don't know........I'd bet most that check out one check out the other. More so, I'd bet it inspires say those with or without FB-AEP/PF to notice what they're missing. Really, if you don't have the whole series you're missing so much.

Yet IL2 the original at this point is just nostalgia.....For good reason things really have improved from what I understand. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Everyone should buy "IL2 Sturmovik" when they`re starting this sim.
Then buy FB Gold and PF and see what 1C came through.

I prefer ETO to PTO so i always come here first then pop over to PF forum later to see whats going on. As well as FB/AEP/PF + add-ons i still have the original il2 on my hdd.

Im still a noob. I bought original IL2 in about May this year, and have worked up to 4.01m in a short space of time. I have to say that I would never have bought PF for a standalone install. It just doesnt hold the same appeal for me.

Did you notice the muzzle flash and the water and he pilot.... see how better they are in FB4.01m? Also look at the texture of the land and the incockpit textures... of course this could be because of the video card and settings used by the poster but....

It has been said before and I'll say it again. The sound engine for the IL2 is AWESOME compared to later versions.

I have it installed and still fly it on every now and then ust to hear the engine roars, landing gear rattles and brake noises.

It was and still is a great game. Doesn't take near as big a machine to run it as does the FB/PF version.

As for PF? I tried to enjoy it. It has some fun planes, but I'm a LW, ETO type flyer and the carrier stuff just doesn't do it for me. It is fun to try out PTO birds against LW stuff in QMB and vice versa though.

Nope Bearcat, i am running a ath64 3200+, 6600GT, 2 gig of 3200 ram. I run FB/PF in perfect and water 3. Believe me that is the IL2 original at its best!

Now from my PoV that would really be shame, since I have spent great deal of my entire online time exactly here, reading posts and learning something in the process. This is really good place, good forum. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yeah, I'm not much of a PF forum fan either, BG. Surprised to see the high post counts of some guys there who I've never seen over here. Guess the same goe in reverse though. I find it surprising that they wouldn't come over here given the sheer number of planes available in the merged version. Still, there's nowt as queer as folks..

I seldom go over there now. I got fed up with all of the 'My plane won't take off from the carrier' and 'Why can't I see through the Val gunsight?' posts. There's a lot of new guys so understandable up to a point, but I couldn't be bothered wading through it all.

Cheers!

While there are arguments to support merging the two forums, there is a distinctly different feel to the two forums and though it's a bit of a hassle to check both, I think that moderating the two distinct groups is easier that trying to get them to co-exist in peace would be... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In that case then those shots are a real example of how far this sim has come.

I still remember that mission in the Demo. After few atempts to take off i was almost sure i'll have to drive all way to the jeries if I wanted some action http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

WTE_Ibis

I was gonna do that but they drive on the wrong side of the road so I figured that was too dangerous so didn't get any action till I learned to take off. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Bet you'd be singing a different tune if the Graf Zepplin had been completed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Seriously, I tend to be an ETO player myself, and got into the series precisely because of its portrayal of the Eastern Front. I also am a naval fan and love carriers, and you all know they did paly an important role in the Med, the Atlantic convoys and in Norway (Corsairs were there)etc. and love having the chance to do some of that (those baby flat tops are fun). Plus it IS nice to have the chance to fly some Japanese planes done up to 1C quality.

Still I would like a merge.

Hi danjama!

Those screenshots grabbed my attention immediately, as I've recently been having a nostalgic re-play of the original IL-2.

The terrain, water, sky etc look much the same as they do for me but my planes look a bit better than that. Can't figure why that should be, 'cos my rig is certainly no better than yours!

Anyways, am going to finish my 'last play' of IL-2 (before putting it away permanently) with one campaign each as Soviet and German. Yeah, I like the sounds too however...

FB/AEP/PF is a definite overall advance on the original - but (IMHO) an evolutionary advance, rather than the revolutionary one that was IL-2.

Best regards,
