I can't stress how much fun I've been having with this one!

To think that I used to hate Naval Sims.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The graphics are top notch and the campaign is the most immersive and realistic thing I've ever played.

This thing has got as good Developer support as the IL2 series, as two patches have alredy been released.

Back to my campaign:

I've signed on with the 7th Flotilla operating out of Keil. I'm starting with a lowly VIIB, model U-boat and a decent crew.

After a couple of last minute crew changes and the signing on of one additional Officer I headed out of my sub pen on Sept. 2nd, 1939.
One day prior to the historic invasion of Poland.
From my basic understanding of WWII history, I could tell that Poland hadn't been invaded yet, cause the English Ports were showing up as Neutral until Sept. 4th.

Anyway, it's taken me almost two full days just to get to the northern edge of the English Channel. My patrol area, assigned by BdU, is just southwest of England (Grid Bf17). They must have known that that area would be prime hunting grounds once England got involved in the war. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Believe it or not I did not use time compression all that much, during the last two days of my transit, cause the graphics are just so beautiful.....
Watching the sun setting and rising off in the distance, while my ever vigilent crew pulled watch rotation on the conning tower, binoculars to the ready, made me proud of those guys. I already feel a bond between me and my crew of 45. I just hope I don't fail them as their commander. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

After comming through the Northern end of the channel we were on combat alert. This area can get very dangerous, very quick! After learning to dive to 20 meters, every so often, and letting my sonarman make a full sweep of the Hydrophone, my sonarman picked up a contact about 10km Northwest of our current position.

After my sonarman identified the target as a merchant ship, due to the sound of the screws, I made a quick decision to veer off course, to our patrol grid, to investigate and prosecute this potential target.

After charging toward the contact at full-ahead, on the surface, to maximize speed, visual contact was established and the merchant vessel was found to belong to France, due to the type of vessel, and the French flag it was flying.

Although I could see him, due to the darkness, I doubt he never really realized how close he came to destruction that night. I don't think BdU would have been to enthusiastic if I got trigger happy, on an as of yet, Neutral, merchant ship.

So I ordered my navigator to turn 180 degrees and return us to our course through the channel.

After 3 full days, since leaving Keil, travelling at sea, in mostly large rolling waves and overcast skies, me and my crew were itching for the thrill of the hunt and a good kill.

I soon got my wish, as we approached the Port base at Dover, in the channel. My sonarman immediately starting picking up a lot of ship traffic around the area, much of it military armed trawlers and the fast, dreaded destroyers.

After almost being spotted several times my sonarman called out a merchant ship that was crossing our charted course, several kilometers ahead. Too juicy of a target to pass up at this point. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A course was immediately plotted to intercept the vessel and a quick check of the hydrophone revealed that the attack would happen right in between several patrolling destroyers, which would keep us just out of their visual and sonar detection range.

I had the benift of darkness to cover my approach and felt that by the time the mercahnt ship spotted us, and radioed for help, it would be too late.

The vessel was immediately identified as a lone cargo ship of Brittish origin, no doubt bringing supplies into/from Dover, and since it was nightime, a risky decision was made to, "Man the Deck Gun".

Our U-boat steamed full ahead right into the projected path of the enemy ship and at 2000 meters I gave the, "Fire at Will", command. Although my crew is capable of manning the gun themselves I couldn't help but aim and fire the Deck Gun myself. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The waterline of the vessel was targeted with high explosive sheels to maximize the sinking, we didn't want to hang around this area too long, especially on the surface.

As soon as the enemy ship started to sink and eventually split in two, due to the explosion of the boilers, and multiple shell hits, my sonarman began picking up the dreaded sound of destroyers approaching at flank speed. Undoubtedly S.O.S.ed by the sinking cargo ship.

I ordered my diesel engine crew to head south, at flank speed, to put some distance between us and the sinking ship area, which was soon to be a hornets nest of Brittsh military ships, hunting for me.

It was not long before a destroyer acquired me visually and the spotlights and starburst shells started lighting the entire area up, like New Year's Eve!

I had no choice but to order an emergency "Crash Dive" and as my Chief Engineer screammed, "ALLLLLLLLLAAAARMMMMMMMMMM", I could hear the hatches slamming shut and my diligent crewmen running to their battle stations.

Unfortunately, the crash dive was ordereed in only about 40 meters depth of ocean, and to my horror, I could hear and feel, the downward propelled sub, slamming into the seabed below! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Compartments started taking damage and a repair team had to be quickly organized, all while that darned destroyer was closing in!

Meanwhile, every other Brittish military vessel, in the area, was radioed of my position and they were steaming in for a Turkey Shoot.

Luckily my crew was able to repair the damage to the compartments and we were on our way, silent running.....

Again, a poor decision made by me, as their commander, was rectified quickly by my professional, hardworking crew. I'm getting pretty fond of these men. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

After some hairy close calls by some depth charges, from the single destroyer, that got to me first, we were gradually and silently making our way South to safety.

I had to chuckle when I peeked in external view and saw the single destroyer, and several others that joined the hunt, circling my last known location dropping depth charges behind them.

We were out of danger, got our first bit of tonnage, we were alive, and headed to our patrol grid. Life is good. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Me and my crew feel pretty confident at this point, spirits are high, and we're looking forward to a juicy convoy sighting, when we will finally hit our patrol area, sometime the next day.

For once the Hunter almost became the Hunted! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, the freedom and power that you have, being a U-Boat commander in SHIII's dynamic campaign is amazing. You can go anywhere and do anything, while the whole world is alive and at war around you!

It's like really being given your own command and crew! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey Charlie,

Since you didn't use time compression much in 2 days, didn't you get tired of moving the crew around in the Crew Management?? That drove me nuts until I heard that if you used time compression in the Map View, that they didn't get fatigued, so you don't have to move them around all the time....

Anyhow, I have it too, and it is awesome!!

yes baring a few bugs like the UZO bug and the forever storms its a top rate game. im haveing a blast with her. i used a type II for awhile and uped to the VIIb many more torps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . i ran into a convoy the other day in calm weather and with NO escorts. o it was a fine day for the 3rd R ill tell ya what. useing torps and my trusty deckgun i think it was some odd 50,000 tons + all the nuturals that happend to be around. i could not believe i sank the whole dang convoy. as i left the disamated convoy i then sand two costal cargo's and a torp patrol boat. OOOooooo das boot all the way bro. down brit tankers is as much fun as splashing german 190s hahah.

i just hope thay come out with a DC2. i missed out on the first and i want to take a fletcher class DD on a sub hunt so bad i can tast it. Fletcher like a mofo bro!! best looking ship ever built IMO.

I really want to get this game. I haven't played a subsim since Silent Service on the NES and lets just say I wasn't even old enough to know I was fighting for the US against Japan in WWII. I just sunk ships. So, its been a long time and I think from what I've read the Devs are really embracing the mod commiunity..so maybe we could see a lot of great stuff from this game.

Actually it was 2 days into the campaign before my crew even started to get tired?

I don't know if the patch 1.2 helped or if I did a good job using my renown to swap some inexperienced crewmen and petty officers for more experienced ones. Either way it was 2 full days after leaving port before even the first crewman got the dreaded <span class="ev_code_RED">!</span>.

1024x seems too much like cheating for me and I'm afraid I might pass a juicy target before I even know it, or miss out on a BdU radio message of a convoy sighting. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I haven't been able to hit that magical spot on a destroyer yet, as most of my gun duels with them end up in my having dead crewman on deck and a critically damaged sub.

I've had better luck with the smaller armed trawlers, although this too is a dangerous proposition.

This game is destined to become a classic! If you have the patience for IL2 you won't regret getting SHIII and should have no trouble at all playing it and learning the various systems.

This has become my new addiction, lasting into the late night which makes for long days at work and early afternoon naps.

A few comments:
- If you d/l the sim, you are limited to 5 installs. Having the sim on DVD there is no limit.

- DVD is the future. 1.66Gb of SH3. That would take 3 cd-roms, which isn't practical. This means upgrading. There have been install/read problems with what is called the combo drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM. Do yourself a favor and get a DVD-RW.
DVD-RWs are inexpensive. Heres the one I bought for US$59. NEC ND-3520A/GEN (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=160456&Category_Code=cdrw-dvdrw)

I got my copy on friday.

You know, people talk about the sim, you see the screenshots...so you think: ok, I'll give it a try...

Three days later, this is my opinion...

SHIII is GREAT!!!!!. You can't hardly believe what you experience on a night attack with those tracers, searchlights, bullet and cannon shells hitting you while you dive, dive, dive...

Guys, I tell you, even when nothing happens around SHIIIis amazing. Last night I had a good time myself having a cup of tea in front of the screen... and I was just watching the seagulls over my ship.

I can wait now another month for PF 4.0 if necessary, I've got my VIIb and a great crew. I've run 6 patrols so far. It's April, 1940 and we are on the "happy days".

Let's see what happens in the future.

By the way, we got 80000 tons so far, the boss seems pretty happy with us http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

Not a bad weekend, I would say.

Another U-Boat and her crew lost to the war at sea. I've learned that you should balance the inexperience of the commander and crew against your aggressiveness during the early part of the war.

And never underestimate the A.I.'s ability to call for help and work together, nonstop, to turn your sub into nothing more than an oil slick!

I'm 15 patrols into my carrer, with about 280 tons sunk. I checked everything except the weaps officer (why else is he on the boat?) and the external views because I like to take screenshots. I tend to leave the warships alone unless they are being stupid like sitting still in the south channel. I've hit convoys in the north channel and the south channel, and the mid atlantic in storms so bad I swear I was going to get sea sick sitting at my PC. I'm using a VIIC and its January '41.

This game is that good. I'm playing about 4-6 hours a night and it's killing me at work the next day....

I love it too ans have been having a great time. Altough, its alittle lonely sometimes, I sure wish they would "stock" the ports with some ship traffic and some docked. I spent a whole night sneaking into a harbor and it was empty. Of course i died on the way out.

It would also be great if they came out with a new DC game, and made the two mesh like someone said they did before. Coop is fun, but i want some human destroyers chasing me.

Too bad Oleg didn't do it. just think, we could have a shIII/DC/PF/AEP/FB merged install. How great would that be?

Hell, throw in a ww2 FPS, and we'll for true pass us a good ol time. It'd be like wwol on steroids.

Depends on the "Draft" of each type of ship (check your "Recognition Manual").

Usually 1 meter to 3 meters below, is sufficient (make sure you've set your "Fish" to magnetic detonation, it's on by default IIRC). Unless of course, you are firing in stormy seas, then I usually set Torpedo depth right at the bottom of the ships draft and not 1 meter lower.

Because in stormy seas the surface waves can cause your torpedo to run slightly lower or higher (or bounce) as it is affected by the waves while it travels to it's target. There's nothing worse than seeing your "Fish" travel too low in a choppy sea and go right under your intended target, (too low for the magnetic detonator to activate). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Also if a ship is of low enough tonnage, you can hit her broadside (no need for a below keel shot) and still get a kill with only one "Fish".

Firstly STOP IT you are killing us - we need to sleep sometime, don't we? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

OK, beautiful graphics and amazing gameplay, but is it difficult to learn? And when you say "days", how long does a "day" last without any time compression?

Finally, I have a combo DVD/CD-RW drive that has not given me any problems installing DVD games in the past, should I be worried about this particular game with regards to installation?

Tact - "I have too many games now" - S!

Slingn
04-12-2005, 07:44 AM
Firstly, what is this sleep thing you refer to? is it something like the sun thing i hear others talk about?

No, its not to tough to learn. Especially coming from games like flight sims.

A day last a day without time compression.
you can compress up to 32 times in all stations, and up to 1024 in the map screen. So considering that a patrol may be 1/2 way across the ocean, even using max compression when there is no action, a patrol can take several hours.

I think there is a list somewhere of dvd's that have problems. Check the support section of the SHIII website. The game does have starforce( i think thats the name) copy protection and it seems to be a little picky about drives.

Good Luck, enjoy.

Philipscdrw
04-12-2005, 08:26 AM
SH3 is teh excellent. I think the speculation about StarForce fouling up with some DVD drives was greatly overblown - you're 99% certain to have no problems with the DVD drive.

I'm just reading a book about Coastal Command in the early parts of the War - it seems that the Swordfish wasn't really used as an ASW aircraft, but the Hudson, Anson, and Sunderland were, from 1939. Also the anti-submarine bomb used by the RAF was woefully ineffective - the HMS Scrapper, a British sub, was hit at the base of the conning tower by a 100lb AS bomb by accident, and suffered 4 blown lightbulbs and some broken crockery as a result...

Make no mistake about this game lads, Charlie is right. This game is the real deal. I honestly cannot recall a game being as good right out of the box as this one. They held the release date off about 1.5 years to put a true dynamic campaign in, and it makes all the difference in the world. There were a few minor problems with it, but UBI put a patch out like TWO DAYS after the release date to fix them.

The immersion factor in this game is absolutely unreal. Each mission you start off with a band playing on the dock alongside, and frauleins throwing flower petals at your boat as you pull out of the slip. The stormy seas look completely amazing. Countries enter the war on the correct historical dates. You can award medals to your crewmen which increases their effectiveness-- and then you actually SEE HIM WEARING THE MEDALS IN THE 3D VIEW! Charlie touched on this a bit-- but the AI works together. If you torpedo a lone merchant very near the coast, he will send out a distress call and soon a destroyer or an airplane WILL come looking for you if you do not vacate the area. Sink too many ships in one area, and they will totally inundate the place with ships and planes looking for you. The sunrises and sunsites are at the accurate times for the part of the world you are currently sailing in. You can sail into new york harbor, and see the 1940's NYC skyline--it's all modelled.

There is much more, you really must check it out. Best subsim ever, and in my opinion one of the greatest sims in general, of all time.

Only problem is, i cannot find enough time to fly FB anymore, or finish the campaigns i was working on for it.

i can hardly fault this game, and i cant get over the whining in its official zoo.

out of the box it was perhaps the most grabbing game ive ever played next to EQ2, pathced its even more amazing
the feel of being there is perfect!
considering the whole world is drawn it is astonishing that it even runs on my pc let alone that the only flaw ive ever had other than 2 ctds when managing crew is a weird graphical flicker.
now we get to ride subnets too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif not advisable.
frankly i have a hard time these days chosing what to play, its between EQII and SHIII
the online aspect is well implemented ive never seen any lagg and have to admit nothing is as funny as a last second 2 inch dodge of your nutty friends torpedo http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i kinda got used to the planes coming apart in FB, in this every time i sink a big ship i feel like ive rlly achieved something.

it has a bug or 2 but nothing that will kill the gameplay or hamper it to any degree, its also infinitly customisable.
the only things i edit are the readout for headin (its to small) the german markings and the time in port ( i dont want to do 14 missions in the whole war i enjoy it too much)

crew management is a tad dull. but there are ways around it (assign 2 shifts by name on a piece of paper and swap them every 8 hours or so) hehe hard work but it does the job
now if only we had a shift option in the game itself it would be perfect.
i do beleive however that schindlers factorys produce 2 thirds of my torpedos.
you may also want to sink everything you can with your gun when you have the chance! last time i let a few go i got stuck in a storm! could have sank the lot with my gun but though no ill wait for a better target

actually on the subject the weather is a bit funny, i had a little mist one time and was told i coudlnt man the guns because of rough seas, theyre wasnt even a spray on the deck ad the sea was like gladss lol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

this game taunts me so... i began my career in a mk IIa and my 7th patrol was an56.. this is the grid scapa is in. on my way in i saw a british c2 cargo nd launched 2 torps... both missed so no alarm was raised ... so i decided to sneak in.. at about 20.00 i was 20k out of the actual port and in the gathering dusk i raised my periscope to the most beutiful target i had seen so far.... a dido light cruiser... quickly getting lined up on the target i loosed my remaining 3 torps (the mk III only has ) with about 30 seconds to go before my torps hit home i saw her stacks began to smoke.. my torps had been spotted and she was trying to escape... thinking that i had missed i turned to sneake out the way i came in.. only to be greeted with 2 large explosions... i quickly raised periscope and had a look. she had stopped moving but handnt gone down... i realised that i had only destroyed her props and rudder... so with a heavy heart i sailed back home setinga course west around ireland for brest.. about 10 hours later i started hearing a large number of merchants on my hydrophones.. seeing as i had no torps left i thought id still go and have a look (this hopefully being my first convoy) so i called flank speed and set a course to investigate.. when i got within range i nearly wet my pants... there must have been 200k woth of shipping to be had.. and all i had was a pea shooter of a flak gun... (twice in one mission is unfair) still i now knew i had enough renown for a viic.... i would return

I'm annoyed as I bought the UK version from a mail order import shop and after less than a week of popping it in and out of the DVD case, it's developed cracks radiating out from the central hole. It's still readable as of now, but the cracks expand a little after each use.

The mail order company won't replace it, but Ubi has a 90 day return policy. However, as it it the UK version, they say I have to ship the whole thing back to the UK which will cost me about $20 USD.

To make things worse, some people from Ubi are saying they won't mail back to Japan while others are saying it's OK.

This Sim (SHIII) has got me over waiting for something to develop with Pacific Fighters. I really don't miss not playing or viewing what's happening or not happening with PF. I just don't miss it at all. I check this forum out about once a month to see if Oleg/Ubi have gotten the long-lost patch available for download, when I determine nothing new has materialized, I play SHIII or go to the sub websites.

I've gone over to the Dark-Side; below and sometimes on the ocean deep. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The first games I truly enjoyed were Sub sims and flight sims. They have improved sooo much since the good old Commodore '64 and XT days.

The only thing wrong with SH3 is the damage model of the subs. I've lost a rudder and prop and that damage shows but when your used to the detail of Il2 with bullet holes and scorch marks all over the place I felt a little disappointed. SH3 maybe the best sub sim around but IL-2 still wins for greatest Sim.

Just read this whole thread and never tried any naval sims before. I just so happen have just returned from a trip to Baltimore and went aboard the USS Torsk a WW2 sub. Very awe inspiring those guys had some stones serving in those boats. Talk about cramped quarters!! Its simply amazing to actually see all the systems it took to operate one of those and by todays standards very primitive equipment at that. Think Im gonna try my first Naval sim!!

This sim is TOTALLY engrossing! Kilgore was WAY right when he said "SH3 is the crystal meth of sims...."! It's hard as hell to fly with this thing on my system.

Now I may be biased since I played the cr@p out of Silent Service and Silent Hunter by Microprose way, way back ... but this version is SO true to the original. All the immersion and tension ... just with better graphics! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Now if it was only in the Pacific!

Send the game back to the MO company and tell them you don't agree to the licence agreement. They'll have to refund you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I ordered mine from Play.com, so I hope it's not the guys you ordered from. Even so bad disks do happen and the company should really swap the disk for a better one.

My copies been posted (at last, took forever for them to restock), so I'll hopefully be adding some screenies and stories of my own soon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Can't wait - this thread has me itching to play. What's the coop MP play like? Can you join a campaign and sub around together?

That's the game I've been trying to remember for ages, and what a sim that was! I played that game for hours on end and had great fun.

My best game, that I still remember to this day (many years ago) was my surprise encounter with the japanese fleet.

At some early hour in the morning the alarm was raised. Nearly jumping out my seat I quickly went to the conning tower to take a look. Looming in front of me I had a broadside shot of a carrier. Behind me a destroyer or something. I had somehow managed to drift in between the moving group, totally unseen.

Without a moment too lose, I fired all my forward torpedo tubes and then ordered a crash dive (the carrier was 500m if not closer, moving directly across my bow). Flank speed ahead I went straight under the carrier. After I cleared her, I came back up to periscope depth, still at flank, acquired her and let loose all my rear bays. I then set crash dive to get below the thermal layer and lower, taking her down into the deep dark place where the eerie sound of your hull buckling almost makes you wish you hadn't.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing happened. They never knew what hit them and didn't have a clue where I was. I surfaced to periscope depth and took a look. I could see the carrier smoking off in the distance and her escort looking for me.

Man Jex_TG, when I read this last night you reminded me of one of my great career enders. I spotted a huge task force and spent an hour sneaking into position (using time compression and all). They were coming right at me out of the Luzon Straight ... so I laid in wait. Timed it perfect, escort Tin Cans missed me and when I brought up scope I was dead center between to approaching Japanese carriers. Both under 500 meters with one facing my bow the other aft. PERFECT!!! I let them have it with all had ... six fish into one and four fish into the other ... cut 90 and ran silent waiting for the show!

Half were duds! Two out of the bow and three out of the stern. I managed to take out the forward carrier with the four good hits and barely damage the aft carrier. I crash dove ... there could be no doubt of my position ... I fought the cat and mouse game for the next three hours. Thermal layers ... position changes with glide ... oil/debris ... you name it. They gave up the hunt leaving one destroyer behind and my batteries dead and no air. I had to surface, waited until she was on the farthest leg of her sweep, came up and hit the diesel and the chase was on. She came on fast ... firing all the way ... I dove and waited till she got in close, got a bearing, fired my last aft torpedo and cut left 90 as she blew off my periscope and hit my hull one last good one. I nailed her ... you could hear her breaking up ... she was going down ... but so was I ... I was taking on to much water. We both rode it out to Davey Jones locker. It was 4:30 AM!

I thought about that all day at work today ... so when I got home I crawled up into my garage and dug through my computer graveyard boxes ... and check this out ...

I got a big smile on my face Tex ... all the way from 1995 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Look. Guys.

I am trying really, really hard NOT to buy SHIII because it entails purchasing a DVD drive, just to enable installing SHIII. Unless there is a site where I can download the game itself (and not simply purchase and ship a hard copy), I really shouldn't get it.

Besides, I get too little sleep as it is. If I get SHIII I'll end up having a heart attack from fatigue due to a complete lack of rest, and there's nothing I can get from Starbucks that will prevent that, 'kay?.

You guys are not making this any easier.

Alas, I know I'll break one day. It's inevitable...

My first love has always been submarine simulations, but when UBI let loose SHII and later DC, I was so miffed that I decided to start flying (IL2 Sturmovik). SHII was a POS in my book. 2D graphics, scripted missions, etc.! Even the multi-play was ****!

I have sat and watched the SHIII development process, and read all the reviews. So...

I broke down and got a copy yesterday.

I must say this, SHIII is EVEYthing SHII should have been. The graphics are nice. The sounds are crisp and clean. The community is already making very nice modifications to the game, the developers are already fixing bugs not discovered during beta. It's a first class simulation.

BUT... Now I have a problem... I dont have enough time to play both games (IL2 and SHIII!) Grrr!

Seriously though, if you are into the cat and mouse game of hunt/be hunted, SHIII is the game for you. I totally recommend the use of headphones when playing this game.

Oh, and visit subsim.com for the record player modifications. Listening to authentic WWII era music really adds to the atmosphere of this sim.

I was impressed!

I just sunk a brittish destroyer that ran across my plotted course and saw an oil slick on the surface for the first time. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I haven't seen this before and believe it's dependant on where or how the ship is hit and sinks.

Unbelievable!!!!

I will try to get my screens of this posted shortly.

Did you know this will replace your cd-rw? Its true. You can put the cd-rw in a back-up, sell it, or give it to a friend. Point being, eventually you're going to make the move. Why not now? Having a DVD-ROM is something every PC should have. I've got a TV hooked up as a second monitor and with my 6.1 speakers my PC is now the ultimate in entertainment. =)

It only cost me Au$20 for a normal DVD-rom and the fact is CD-Roms are obsolete, like BETA and VHS. =)

This one looks really interesting! Have to get it i think.
I went and looked at that direct2drive site, the game isn't in store here yet and when it will be it will cost me $15 more than from direct2drive.
I was wondering one thing though, in the DVD version is there a paperback manual? A good one i mean, i would easily pay $15 extra for a really good printed manual!

About 50(+or-) pages IIRC.......
Which is about as good as you get these days.

However, a really nice Map of the Atlantic comes with the game, with port locations and charting all the patrol grid areas and all known convoy routes, with the appropriate dates for each route. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Plus you get a decent Key Card in the box!

I€ve had SH3 for about a month now and I just bought PF last night but after reading this thread, I€m ready to get back in the sub when I get off work. I€ve even put off Rome: Total War! I€ve played many flight and naval sims (SH2, DC, Jane€s Naval Simulations) and SH3 appears to be the best of the best. One drawback (unlike Battlefield 1942 where every mod from Vietnam to Iraq War was created and available to the public for free) is I believe the modders for the SH games charge fees for Pacific mods, etc. Shame really but perhaps mods are out there on a files sharing program like Kazaa or something. If anybody has more info on FREE mods for SH3, please let me know.

Although some may have figured this out, using full time acceleration on map really helps speed up the game. It will automatically slow down if there is a contact or radio message so you don€t have to worry about missing anything. I can get about 2 patrols done an evening (apprx 6 hours). I usually run at periscope depth, slowest speed and with silent running surfacing only to recharge batteries/air or move torps from external to internal. I always return from my missions with 75% of diesel fuel left. I learned pretty quickly from this sim and others about dangers of traversing the English Channel so I always take the northern route if coming from east of England.

I also stay away from destroyers as the tonnage for the single one I did sink at the beginning of my career didn€t amount to a hill of beans. Cargo and tanker ships are where it€s at and it€s all about tonnage sunk, right? I€m sure cruisers and battleships have large tonnage but I have yet come across any (though I€ve heard through grapevine there€s a nice big cruiser near some bay NW of England. Anyway, I joined the 1st Flotilla in 1939 and it€s near the end of 1941 and I€m already running out of crew to hand U-boat clasp awards to.

OK, without "turbo" time too much, what could a person with 1-2 hours available in the evening "accomplish" with this great game mate(s)?

I think this is what's keeping me from purchasing it. Playing a game like R:TW can take some time to finish even a short campaign, but one can engage in a number of battles in even a one hour session.

Without rushing the experience what could I expect playing it for an hour or two a couple times a week?

Hawggy
04-27-2005, 04:30 PM
Well, the turbo time is used when in transit to & from patrol sectors. In two hours time, I can complete a patrol without a rushed feeling, especially if I run into a large convoy. Just sinking another ship is worth playing for two hours to see.

I got SH3 a few weeks ago and i have to say it is the best sub-sim out there, a vast improvement over SH2. works really good on my system specs.

September 1941

Patrol #13

Will this be the cursed patrol for me and my men? Will we come home alive? We left Brest almost a month ago heading southwest and this has been the slowest patrol yet. No ships at all. I can't recall any other patrol where I made it to my assigned location with all torpedoes remaining (with the exception of one stupid warrant officer who accidentally pressed the 'fire' (enter key) button- he'll have watch duty for some time now).

Shortly before I reached my assigned destination, I did come across a beautiful convoy of American tankers heading to Gibraltar. However, they were neutral and it wasn't December yet. Me and my officers discussed pursuing the convoys for several months while waiting for the moment when the Japanese entered the war so we can blow them out of the water but decided it wasn't worth it and there would be better targets of opportunity.

I have become impatient with the lack of ships in my current patrol area so I must decide where to hunt next. Should I head to the Strait of Gibraltar where there will be a plethora of ships? Should I head west? With almost a full load-out of torpedoes and fuel, I start heading back to base. Some may consider this cowardice but I have a plan. My old hunting grounds. Northwest off the African coast is where I will seek my victory.

Three days into the journey. "Sound contact! Merchant. Closing!"

"Set an intercept course," I calmly tell my helmsman. "Up periscope."

Small coastal merchant ship. Although not a big prize and wasn't what I was expecting, it is the enemy and it will be fish food. It's a small and fast ship so I will have to make sure I have proper angle and timing on this.

"Lock on target!" "Fire torpedo one!" I scream to crewman. No response. Rats!! I forgot to order my crew to reload torpedo one after misfire by warrant officer. Make that KP duty for him too!!

"Quick. Lock on target. Fire torpedo two!" I yelled again.

"Torpedo away, sir" my subordinate tells me.

BONG!!! The torpedo just bounced right off the ship's hull. A dud!!

"Fire torpedo three" I order as I also adjust the speed of my ship as I'm closing awfully fast.

BLAM!!! Perfect angle in middle of the ship.

"Torpedo impact," I'm told by crewman but the ship didn't sink. It sped up!!

"Fire torpedo four. Full speed ahead," as I'm sure this will do the little ship in.

BLAM!!! The ship no longer has a rudder and is dead in the water. However, it still refuses to sink. This has got to be the toughest, luckiest little ship I have ever come across. As my sub maneuvered around to the other side of the ship, I gave the final order to fire aft torpedoes.

BLAM!! Gone. That little sucker took a lot of poundings and just disintegrated.

Since then, I have continued my course and came across several nice cargo ships that were a better prize and easier kill. I think I'll give my crew a day off before we finish the hunt and head home. Another enemy will be joining the war by the end of the year and we must be prepared.

I wouldn't go THAT far, but I will say it's an attention diverter, that's for sure.

There's something to be said about the historical accuracy of SH3 - This place (http://uboat.net) is teeming with historical info that compliments the game. It's really cool to get a piece of history from games, i.e.:
http://www.mouselook.com/~hawggy/flotilla.jpg
This pic was taken from Hidden & Dangerous II: Sabre Squadron in the Brest subpen. The emblem on this conning tower is actually the emblem of the 9th flotilla, that was stationed at Brest in '41. SH3 has them stationed there as well. Historical continuity just makes me all warm inside, especially when I get the history lesson while having fun. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I just had a "Harrowing" experience!

Last Patrol was 3 weeks straight of severeve weather, god knows the N. Atlantic isn't fun in the winter.

I just about cr@pped my pants watching the waves break over my poor men in the conning tower.

Had a blast hunting ships in extreme fog, <400m visiblity. Had to constantly submerge to get a bearing with the Hydrophones and plot it's course.

I actually felt bad for the merchant ships knowing that they were steaming forward to their impending doom.....any lifeboats in the freezing water, in this weather is a death card.

Finally plotted a great intercept course and waited for the unfortunate ship to cross my path.

I'm on the surface so I can, quicky maneuver to decrease range to arm torpedo's if necessary.

All of a sudden this GIANT Tanker busts out of the fog at less than 300 meters, like a ghost ship straight out of H@ll.

Man that thing scared the cr@p outta me cause I've never seen one that close up.

Anyway this ship purposely steers straight at me, Ramming speed.

I had to gun the engines and order the watch crew off the conning tower immediately.

That "Ghost" ship just hit the backside of my VII C causing some moderate damage, which required immediate repairs.

I'll be darned if that ship did not disappear as fast as it showed up, and me and my men soon returned to port badly shaken.

That's all for now....... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Well, considering the mass difference, it makes plenty of sense for them to try and ram you. Crash diving & running zig-zags help keep them from doing so, but if you just put your noodle out there in front of even merchants, they'll play chicken with your soft u-boat, and almost always win. It's really cool to dive before a ramming attempt and watching the vessel go overhead with the periscope underwater. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

ooh ooh this game is fun! I havent started a mission yet, just doing the training mission.

So i'm cruising along on ths convoy mission , i put a nice fish in the destroyer after 3 misses and sent the guns to the bottom. Then i surfaced and started firing away with the deck guns. I set the cargo ship afire and moved my aim to another merchant. So i'm looking through the deck gun scope firing away at the merchant when out of the corner view is the bow of that cargo ship , "BOOM" he nails me broadside dead even with the conning tower! So much for my easy grade on that one!!

It was kind of fun watching the destroyer and the armed trawler shoot at each other , they must have had a bad poker game! Bugs and all i love this game.

this game never ceases to amaze me!

The latest little tidbit , I used a merchant to shield me from the destroyer and armed trawler who were buzzing around me. Im listening intently to my sonar when the destroyer passes by so i poked my periscope out to take a look. There about 600m ahead is the destroyer so i shot 3 torps in her direction ,in a fan , one to the left middle and right so i could get her if she turned. Im sitting there watching and hear her jam the throttles and turn hard left , ah middle one missed. but that left shot is right on target........all of a sudden from the right comes the trawler full speed and intercepts the torpedo to save the destroyer! Taking one for the home team! Simply amazing stuff!!

Here's what happened to me about a month ago online, haven't played online ever since...

http://img59.echo.cx/img59/7024/trafficjam9qf.jpg

http://img59.echo.cx/img59/4783/trafficjam20ff.jpg

Here I'm playing the happy times single mission, hiding from the destroyers under a T3 tanker. It was a long and exhausting experience, took about 3 hours.... Not really, about 2 hours but I used time compression so it really took about 1 hour. It's along time to do nothing but to listen how they tried to depthcharge me. When I finally had enough, I noticed that the destroyers had used all their depth charges, it was payback time http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif
But just when I was rising my periscope, a destroyer rammed right into my conning tower, I lost both periscopes http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
I did blow the T3 up before this so I did get my prize, but after losing my scopes I surfaced and started blasting the dastards up with the deck gun, needless to say what happened...

It can be freaky how they look when they stare @ you.
The reason is because some of the 3D models have animations for the mouths to move while they talk, but it's not the best in the world (it's not that bad either, just compared to modern FPS' like Half-Life 2, it's a bit antiquated); Therefore, the inactive model has it's mouth agape just a bit. Makes him look like a caveman, and the scruffy beard doesn't help. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
