Ok, I'm in Loch Ewe for the 3rd time. GW 1.1. Patrol number 11, got a message from BDu saying everything around England is a target and considered hostile. There is a Hospital ship in Loch Ewe, is this a viable target which complies with the rules of enggement ?

Thanks for your help !

Salute !

You shoud never target a hospital ship, for moral reasons, it cost the enemy a lot more to take care of an injured person than a dead one, and i do believe it is agisnt ROE.

Are you playing grey Wolves mod 1.1 ?

If I'm right, sinking hospital ships will hurt you with renown - I can't remember the defecit, but it's a large wedge!

Well the question is not asked from a moral perspective (the answer to which is obvious).

The question is asked from the perspective that; in GW 1.1 is it within the rules of engagement to attack any shipping regardless of flag or cargo within 20 degrees of Britain? as is stated in the radio message sent from BDu to ALL UBoots around July 1940.

The answer I guess is: the radio message is for immersion only and you will still get penalised for sinking "neutral" ships. BTW in GW1.1 all ships are the same color on the map so the only way is to visually identify the flag (unless again it's obvious that the contact is hostile i.e Periscope view shows a V&W Destroyer).

I'm now on my way back to St. Naz with 60+k tonnage. I did not sink the hospital ship or the American ships. 3 torpedoes, 1560 rounds flak left. Will sit in a convoy lane near Liverpool for final 1-2 kills before returning to base.

3 kills in 2 convoys before RTB (return to base). Total tonnage 78k, YAHOO !!! I almost crashed into a ship in St. Naz. Visibility was really bad, heavyt fog and heavy rain, night. OIdeal navigation conditions. BTW when you get inside a sub pen it does'nt stop raining, rains inside as well.

Personally I will never attack a hospital ship with wounded men aboard. If however I recieve indesputiable evidence of muntions, war equipment, and soldiers aboard then my rules of engagement change.

On my current patrol I came across a single large ship and a destroyer escorting it, the ship was darkend and it was a moonless night, it was traveling at 11 knots and I was 2500 meters away. Unfortunatly I misidentified her as a troop ship, and fired a spread of 3 fish. The first struck between the bridge and the bow, there was a tremendous secondary explosion, and she went down immediatly. Sadly she truned out to be a hospital ship [ green icon on the map arrrgh], I have as yet not returned to base on this patrol so I dont know what the penalty will be but I am not looking forward to it.

There will be a penalty. In GW all icons are black the only way to be sure of what you are hitting is to positively identify it at close range, flag and all. Of course if it's obviously hostile this rule does'nt apply.

Well if there was a penalty it wasnt very noticable, I ended with my best tonnage count on a GW patrol yet [45k], and I got 10k renown for the patrol [lol, I guess Berlin's propaganda machine made it look like a legitimate kill] I got the Knights Cross with oak leaves as well [ great I sank a Hospital ship and I am a hero, its like being in Hezballah] Oh well it didnt hurt that I got an Aux Cruiser and a couple of large tankers on this patrol too. I do love this Mod, the patrols really have the feel of the ones I have studied.

LOOOL ! That's the funniest post I've read here today, LMFAO !

I don't know what the penalty is, but according to the community manual (IIRC) there is a penalty to renown from sinking neutral ships. You got 10k renown for ONE patrol ??? No way ??? Are you playing the stock game v1.4 ?

Damm I'm playing GW1.1 for 78k I think I got no more than 3,500 renown, maybe 4500 I did'nt count it exactly but it sure wasn't even close to 10k. Am at approx 20k (including expenditure upgrade) total renown in 11 patrols (in 12th patrol). Can't wait to get 15k to get the next rank.

edit: just reread your post, you are playing GW1.1 I think. So what's your realism percentage ?

Well I thought it was pretty odd myself, I realy expected to get hit pretty bad for the hospital ship, and to make matters worse I also sank an American large cargo on that patrol as well, since its December 1940;[but it was well within the blockade zone close to England so maybe they didnt punish me for that one] I am using GW 1.1 and SHIII Commander at 97% realism [I keep the event camera cause I like to see what happens to my torpedos especially when I miss which happens more often then I would like lol] and to be slightly more accurate I got 9K and change on the renown, but still...lol. this was my 4th patrol in this campaign started it with 3k renown now I have 12+k with a type VIIC.

Hospital ships are a difficult one, the SAS in the Falklands was were lit up by an Argentinian hospital ship whilst assaulting a garrison. This was made the ship a participant and a viable target with a very fragile cargo.

It should have sat there without action, but even a radio comunication with the garison to help direct the mortars would have constituted an act of aggression.
