Twice I tried to host a ranked match but inviting 4 of my friends but every time when the lobby gets full, I see the launch button greyed out. Has it got something to do with the ranks of individual players ?

You probably went on ranked matches i think. It says in the description that you will not be able to play with friends. I think it is player match that you need to go on for it to work. It was confusing to me at first because it didn't explain to me clearly and at first i thought it was a bug but read the description to the game modes carefully.

You can't play a ranked match AGAINST your friends. You can play a ranked match with three friends if you choose manhunt or chest capture or escort (you will be automatically placed in the same team) or with just one friend if you choose alliance. However you can't play wanted or assassinate with your friends in a ranked match, only a player match.

Ranked matches count towards your templar grade score so in order to avoid cheating, the game won't allow you to do that. Of course, the templar grading system is broken and ubi doesn't care to fix it, but still, rules are rules

Do you have any Connectivity issues as well, and can you Play the Normal Matches ? According to me the ranked matches are the one that count for your Templar scores, and this is not the case in the normal player situation....

This is the reason why ranked tends to be harder, so sometimes you won't be able to play against people of your own caliber. Actually, if you look closely the thing is that in ranked match player you usually tend to play with a person who is roughly at your level of skill. And this is not the case in other situation. There the situation is that you will encounter a person where you're better than basically everyone.

Someone also mentioned that, Ranked matches count towards your Templar score and Leader boards. This means that everything you do in a ranked match like the kills or death and some other actions are taken into account to build up your statistics.

Btw, also go through this Topic for much better explanation/clarification. Hope this helps you ?

Thanks all of you. Although I was aware that the stats are considered in the global leaderboards & the player is pitched against others having similar ranks, I didn't know about that fact that you can't play against your friends.

Well actually, like mentioned by one Guy ('obliviondoll') in the Link/Topic which I've provided above, "You can play Team Modes alongside friends - i.e. you can team up with another player before loading Alliance and the Game will automatically pair you up in Ranked matches, and you can have up to 3 others with you in Manhunt/Chest Capture/Escort Ranked matches".
