View Full Version : Slightly OT: Battle of Midway for Xbox 360

I understand that it's totally arcady but:

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/midway/index.html

Some aspects look kinda cool. I like how planes actually use the elevator to get to the deck of the carriers.

Yes, there weren't B-17s involved at Midway, and yes Midway looks more like Borabora than the low lying atoll that it ought to be, but if you want accuracy you've got IL2.

Like many on these boards have said, anything that gets younger gamers interested in the genre or time period is a good thing....

I think there were a couple B-17's at Midway. Don't know about Hurricanes though.

They were several B-17s at Midway. In fact, the first two attacks against the Japanese came from B-17s who claimed many hits even though they never did hit. The Japanese feared their range and bombload as well--though in hindsight they really shouldn't have been.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yeah, the AAF PR boys grabbed the B-17E squadron's after action reports where they claimed sinking several carriers from about 10,000 feet, and went to town. First press stories about Midway were that the B-17s won the battle on their own. This led to bad blood between the Fort crews and the USN Dauntless crews, and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, R&R central for pilots, saw several epic bust-ups with massive casualties on each side. What the bomber boys saw was the ships belching black oil smoke as they went to full speed, and the explosions were 5" anti-aircraft guns pounding away at them. None had ever attacked ships before, or even practiced attacking ships, so they were innocent---they just reported what they thought they saw. For heavies, they did all right. A couple sticks came close enough to soak the Japanese officers on their bridges. The effect on them was to think: The Americans have everything waiting for us. What the hell are we doing here?

P.S. This game looks like absolute bilge. I'm surprised they left out space battleship YAMATO.

This game actually looks quite good, its a strategy game where they through in a bit of action.

Heres a video.

This bears as much relation to WWII carrier warfare as BLITZKRIEG does to land warfare. Total knowledge of enemy forces, wildly off orders of battle (Grumman Avengers did not operate from carriers at Midway, B-17Gs!, Wildcats with drop tanks! holy cow!)---just another RTS with dozens of units to move and shoot with little relation to actual tactics. When I was a boy we did the same thing with little plastic toys. Boom boom!

Nice graphics. Looks fun. Apparaently not all the action is at Midway. I bet my 14 year old nephew would stomp the sheet out of me.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think it looks good, and will be good for the flying community.

Who cares if it's not realistic, it's target audience is kids and the person with casual flying interest. If they like that then they'll get interested in games like IL-2 put money into it, and make Oleg have some extra money to spend on making BoB even awesomer...if that's a word. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

I care.

More money from arcade players does not mean better realistic flight sims, it just means better ARCADE `flight sims`.

There`s a difference.

That game looks rubbish. Graphics do not a good sim make.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Jesus Christ its not a flight-sim its a action style tactical strategy.

Itll be great fun for me and my brother to link up!

You lot really are a bunch of elitist snobs.

Ive seen this game demoed and it was very well presented and had great atmosphere, had good fun gameplay....if you decide to take control of an areoplane its easy to fly but if your not careful the battle will go tits up if you dont keep an eye on it. You can play this game entirely from your command ship/control room if you want.

No its not a sim, but its also not an arcade shooter....its more like a game of chess.

For the last time its more of a strategy game. I think its quite original actually.

Oleg could learn a few things from it, especially in terms of multiplayer modes.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Although an arcade game, I have to say I really like the terrain graphics.

I like the graphics too. How about the bug with the bent props while still in the air? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
Honestly, if I had an Xbox, I'd buy this game.

You guys do know that it is being released for PC as well as XBox ... Right? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I personally think it will be a good game. I miss a good naval game such as Fighting Steel or Destroyer Command. It at least shows promise.

@ R_Target: Sure enough there really were B-17's. I never knew. Thanks for pointing that out.

I always thought there were a just a few fighters on Midway and the rest of the aircraft were carrier based.

If only Pacific Fighters actually had ships like that . . .

The real problem is that the "real" flight sims such as Pacific Fighters are mission alot of the elements (historical background, nice and realistic-looking ships and ground bases) that the arcade games seem to get.

Not to mention, flyable Avengers . . .

Historical? Back story maybe, but historical background is a shaky claim, at least in this case. The overall Concept has historical overtones, but the actual implementation is pure entertainment (rather pretty though, I grant you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I had an older friend stop by not long ago and he brought his 12 year old son. The son liked airplanes and was bored, so I fired IL-2 up, he struggled with it until I remembered to drop the realism to be more "arcadey". He fell in love with it, and guess what he's bugging his dad to buy it?

Certainly the more a successful "arcadey" airplane game is, the more money will be spent developing those games, but for every 3 or 4 kids that play it, 1 will get a real interest in flying and WWII. That translates to games that you and I really enjoy.

For myself,I expect as much "realism" as can be squeezed out of our flight sims, but if we poop and complain about people who dare to turn "stalls and spins" off and games that forget to include a "realistic" flight model then people won't want to even be part of this community.
We'll be left languishing in our own "self-righteous realism" which in reality is subjective anyway. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
