Excluding samples, mission files etc (which I did not check) and DGEN and readmes, the only file that is different between 4.00m and 4.01m is files.SFS. Xdelta on Linux produces an 18MB delta between these files which are about 19MB each. I am going to look at some other differencing tools to see if I can see how much has actually changed. However I think 1C uses some obfuscation on the files to prevent hacking so a large diff between files does not necessarily mean large differences in the contents.

I am not sure what the contents of files.SFS represent.

files.sfs is the flight model file and it is encrypted. Since we know the SBD was changed the file should be different and given it's encryption the size of the change can't really be determined. In other words just because it says 18MB is different doesn't mean that much changed. A single line of code could change can cause the encryption to change the entire file. A simple line CRC calc would this and I'm sure 1C uses something more susbstantial than that.

Well, that's basically what I said - hard to probe any further due to the encryption. Something did change, but we knew that anyway. At least it indicates that the changes were in one file and one file only.

That was quick, but then again, I've been sleeping while you differenced. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hi Aaron,

The day 4.01m came out, I did what you did (differenced the patches). Same conclusion; only that file different and, curiously, built the day before patch release. Testing anyone? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There was also this thread:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/2441047033/p/1

There was also another thread where I think it was stated that Files.SFS contained FM, DM and WM "modelling" but that, perhaps also curiously, it had no computational function that would affect frame rates.

Ta,
Norris
