Ahhh yes- the Spitfire 25lbs and the LA-7 3x20mm. Quite a few servers might as well not have any other planes available. It makes perfect sense- these aircraft are ideally suited for flying 500m above the enemy airfield all day long.

Amen. You know before I started flying online I was reading this forum for years as an offline flyer and never really fully understood the complaints about newbs flying "uber" A/C. Obviously now I see. After finally going online I was struck by how many seem to take the easy way out by bringing a gun to a knife fight ( so to speak ). Takes the challenge of most historical accuracy out of the game; flying late war or "what if" A/C where most others are in early/mid war planes ) And yes, the airfield vulching as well; 500m. Hell, you're lucky if they're even that high. Seems most like to strafe taxiing or taking off A/C ( yeah, our nav lights make us good targets kids ).

BTW, what's with all the dorks that refuse to use taxiways and runways and just take-off when and wherever?

Rant mode off.

Out of curiousity, is it possible to make missions for online play where the selection of A/C is limited to a certain year/theatre?

My first jump online...just to see if I could do it, I went onto a server to discover myself sitting off of the runway in an FW-190. Settings for the server were 'no external view'.

I crashed on take-off because I never actually saw the runway. How does one avoid this?

Well, you should spawn on a taxiway. The runway is right next to that, and it should be visible if you S-turn a little to look around the nose. It might seem a little daunting at first.

Yes, it is quite possible. On many servers you'll see a limited selection of planes. I had a lot of fun a little while ago on a server with only Cr.42, Emils, Hurricane Mk.I and Gladiators.

You'll have to look around manually, and it helps if you are familiar with the airfield lay-out. If you don't have Track-IR, you can do what I do: Bind the throttle to the mouse wheel and fly with the mouse in the left hand. That way you have better control of the engine and can look around while flying.

Stand on the brakes, and R or L rudder and hit full throttle for a secong or 2. This'll swing the plane so you can see the runway. Take note of the sky/objects alignments to the runway, swing back in line, keeping these objects 'lined up' until the tail lifts.
