A friend of mine is now using GW mod. He was hit by a DE just off Calais in '39.
They spotted him from almost over the horizon, at night. He was at periscope depth when they got there, there was no way they would have seen him - but they did. This has happened to me befoe, and I have seen other posts asking this question. So does anyone else think the accuracy of the DE's, especially in the early years, is over stated? Should this be toned back a little?

Not at all. I'm out of Saltzwedel '39 right now and the DD's are still very ignorant. I have attacked 2 convoys on my 4 completed patrols and both times easily escaped the destroyer escort, once almost getting run over. Remember they don't have asdic in the early years of the war http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As for being spotted by the enemy, it hasnt happend yet, even after my watchmen fell asleep at the helm and let a tramp steamer close to 2000 meters...

I had a large merchant close to within 1000m on a clear night with moderate waves, not to forget the V&W that appeared infront of me at 1200m in clear daylight with heavy waves http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif (thank god I was in my Type II). U-13 still lives and is terrorising the eastern coastline of Britain http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
