View Full Version : Since when can Stuka's blow up IL-2's!?

Ok, so I started my pilot career in the Junkers Ju-87B Stuka. In my first mission, we were assigned to attack some airbase in the Soviet Union. All of a sudden, we are jumped by a pair of I-16's (Rata's) at 3,000 meters. These guys were coming in fast from behind, and our pair of BF-109 fighter escorts took forever to come down from their higher altitude position. I could see their green tracers whiz past my cockpit. So I say "Screw the bombs" and drop them. Then I see one of the Rata's a little below me and go into a shallow dive to gain speed with the intention of blowing him out of the sky. My Stuka, at 110% power to aid acceleration, closed quickly at 600 km/h+ and I fired at the Rata using my MG's. I did this for a few minutes shooting at him with small direct bursts. Then I ran out of ammo and flew past him - and my rear gunner proceeds to shoot him down!

Ok, this is beside the point, but I couldn't down a Rata with the Stuka MG's.

In the third mission, last night, I had to attack another Russian airbase at low altitude. I'll get right to the point.

Straight ahead, I see 4 IL-2 Sturmovik's neatly lined up and just begging to be destroyed. Since I already dropped my bombs during a dive attack, I was free to seek targets of opportunity.

I do a shallow dive attack on the IL-2's at around 100 meters altitude and to my surprise, two of them blow up right away! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I couldn't down a Rata, but here I blow up 2 IL-2's just like that!? With the Stuka's weak MG's!? WHAT!? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Programming bug?

Were they carrying ordnance? If so, maybe you hit that? Caused a chain reaction? Fuel tanks maybe?

Thats what I was thinking. Hit one of the bombs or something and that caused the explosion. I'd wish you had a track of that...its probably one in a million http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I always forget to take tracks when surprising things happen. I've got about five of strange kills. Took one today where I shot down an Me-262 at the same second as I copped 30mm, then the guy that hit me flew through the debris and caught fire. Looks pretty sweet, all takes about 1/2 sec.

I was thinking that too, but apparently they were just bombless IL-2's on the ground sitting on a field, with no fuel storage tanks in sight. Maybe a direct hit into the fuel tanks of the IL-2's? After all, I came in spraying them with bullets. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I wish I too had a track. I've been trying to make videos of my flights and have only recently downloaded Fraps.

In Pacific Fighters, the Japanese have "fake wooden fabric" planes on the ground in some of their missions. I fell for that a few times, especially from higher altitudes.

But those IL-2's in that mission were "real steel and iron" IL-2's. I am thinking I just got really lucky. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Oh I know...hilarious moments never seem to get captured.

I was flying an IL-2 Type 3M online a few weeks ago and hit a Bf109G-10 in the nose with the 37mm cannon. Just one...he flew on past me on fire then exploded. It was such a great shot...never to be seen by anyone else.

The static ground aircraft have a totally different ( and more simplistic ) damage model than the ones that fly. And all of them are about the same as far as how hard it is to destroy them. A large bomber is just as easy to destroy as a small fighter. Maybe a little easier because it's easier to hit in the first place. You can strafe them with any aircraft and destroy them with either MGs or cannon of any caliber. Also the static aircraft are easier to destroy if you strafe them at certain angles. Some angles they are quite difficult to destroy. IIRC, hitting them from the sides is best??? And I think from the front and back they are tough to kill. Also seems like they need at least a two second sustained burst, then they blow up nicely. If there is a plane on the ground that is not static, such as a AI or human controlled plane that has just landed or has not taken off, they are a totally different animal as far as damage model.

By the way, strange coincidence, but I was flying a Stuka B model the other day and had no fighter cover so I got in a dogfight with a Rata and killed him!!!! I think I got hits in his canopy. Got a PK!!!

What Mortoma said. Aircraft from the Stationary Aircraft menu in Full Mission Builder are far easier to destroy than their flying cousins.

When an AI-plane is shot at he releases his bombs.
Since the ai can't think it releases the bombs when on the ground too.

Seen it many times.

I think it must be hit to so some extent though, but I ve seen it happen after a short burst with mg's too

I think you hit one of his bombs.

+1 This is of course too obvious to comment further on.
