I've never seen anything to match this.

Looks sharp and functions fantastic. Get the problem wrong once, it will use arrows to show the lines you should be looking at. Get it wrong a second time, it will highlight the piece you need to move.

Clicking around on different things, I found out if you click on an alternate line, it will go to that, and you can solve from there. Click on other things to go back to the beginning, or to the end.

Does anyone know what they used for this? Is it proprietary?

I would love to be able to make a bunch of these from some pgn files I have. Their problems are nice, but I would love to be able to set up some themes for myself or my daughters to work on.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, you play the moves all the way through to the final position.

It's just nice. I also turned off my wi-fi, and was still able to do problems (wonder how many this will last for)

Also wondering... I'm thinking of picking up a iPod Touch, anyone out there with one (or an iPhone) able to test this site?

ps - the level 5 ones seem fairly easy so far, so it would be very nice to be able to create your own.

Thanks for pointing this out. I poked around in the source code, and it's pretty slick -- all javascript / ajax.

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure that the problems are all from their Chess Tactics for Beginners product -- it's one of the best tactics sets for beginners. It's nice that they put this up for free.

I, too, am interested in how it works on the iPhone / iPod touch. It may work better without the borders -- try this URL: http://chessok.com/puzzle/puzzle.html . If anyone tries it, please let us know how it works!

I downloaded it to my local machine and got it running offline. Without hacking it up, you need a web server running locally.

It reads pgn files, but they've been marked up with special commands in the pgn comments; a straight pgn file doesn't work. Take a look here: http://chessok.com/puzzle/l1.pgn
This looks like the same syntax they use in all of their training products: Chess Tactics for Beginners, CT-Art, etc. I think they wrote the code to reuse their existing problem sets.

Finally, you probably already know about these other tactics training sites:
CTS (http://chess.emrald.net/);
Chess Tempo (http://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics.html)

Thanks for looking into that. I think it might still be a bit too big.

Found this site today:

...it's for testing sites for iphone compatability

Shredder does have portable player designed for the iPhone

That pgn-ish file doesn't look like your typical pgn http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Nothing there that look replicable.
