Was continuing my offline Campaign over Stalingrad in DCG flying Spitfires Vb...

My squad was wittled down to 3 planes only. We escorted Russian bombers over the target when we were attacked by 4 IAR 80s (I think they were). We tackled them and I shot 2 down, another to no3 wingman, unfortunately, no 3 was shot down in the process.

Now there was only me and my covering wingman and 1 IAR 80. I chased the IAR 80 and hit a couple of times but was out of cannons, then out of mgs, so I ordered my covering wingman (who had diligently stayed on my 6 the whole while) to `attack fighters`.

"Roger-attacking".

In the meantime, I stayed behind the IAR until it looked like the Spitfire wingie was in position.

But the damn wingman wouldn`t attack. He kept faffing around in circles. I ordered him to attack. He confirmed, but wouldn`t. I broke off, hoping maybe now the wingie would attack. Nope. He seemed to bumble around for ages...

Then I noticed 2 more aircraft approaching, couldn`t tell what they were, but was too busy trying to avoid the IAR from getting on my six. If only I had padlock enabled so I could issue the order, "Attack my Target!"

I`d turned off padlock since I got TIR, ages ago.

"This is 2 i`m hit!" I look up, there`s my wingman going down in flames from an attack from the 2 incoming aircraft - enemy aircraft!

Now it was 3 vs 1 and I had no ammo.

So I ran. I ran as hard as possible, but the IAR kept pace and kept chipping at me until part of my wing came off at 0 altitude and I died, shouting in anger (yes, I was so angry, I shouted in reality too!)

Idiot wingman, if only he`d attacked my enemy plane when i said, there were only the 3 of us at the time. From now on, I will enable padlock, just so I can point at the enemy aircraft and say to my blind wingman, "KILL THAT ENEMY AIRCRAFT IN FRONT OF YOU!!!!!"

Rant off.

I feel for ya, SFL. Did you refly the mission? If so, conserve that precious ammo. What is your hit percentage like? I use Sturmolog to see it when offline. My percentage is terrible, mind you, so don't think I'm giving you the holier-than-thou/condescending post.

You said you got two kills earlier, but I've found when escorting that kills aren't the key to mission success, but damaging them enough to disengage is.

YMMV.

I always have this problem. The AI don't fly wingy for me even if I ask them to. I've found the best solution, though it pisses me off, is to fly wingy for them, even if you're the leader. Granted, with situations like that, you should still get plenty of kills.

Well, the first IAR I took down very quickly, taking it`s wingtip off as it attacked the bombers. I immediately left him - so not much ammo was used on him. The second took more work and all my cannons so by the time I was on the last i only had mgs left.

I`ve actually changed my tactic a bit recently regarding shooting enemies. I used to be very conservative before shooting, waiting until I knew I had a kill - the problem with this was that i`d take too long to shoot, therby my wingie in trouble dies or the enemy wingie would come and shoot me down. Often I`d return home with half a magazine unused.

Now I tend to open fire when on target, but not exactly on and trace my fire over him, almost a bit like spray and pray. Both offline and on I seem to be getting more kills per sortie, usually 2 at a time recently.

Of course I run out of ammo far quicker.

I didn`t replay the mission. I have a private policy that if I get shot down I don`t replay the mission and let the enemy AI have it, besides I think I was too wound up to go through all that again. It was a good long mission except for the end bit.

I reckon my wingman was a noob and probably got a bit confused by the approaching enemy planes too.

The bombers did get clean away though... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

sounds like you should give yourself unlimited ammo instead

Sounds like my wingman should shoot the one remaining bogey when I ask him!
