View Full Version : AAA to close?

I can't post a direct link, but it appears the AAA modding website is likely to close shortly. Here's a link to a link, instead: http://mission4today.com/index...ile=viewtopic&t=9651 (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=9651)
It isn't entirely clear what exactly is going on, but this will be a loss to the IL-2 community.

I've been reading about it the last few hours.

It's kinda conflicting:
they say (paraphrasing)they are going out if they can't get a hold of the cat who pays the bills for the site (if I may be so general to say so). I think that outlines the salient facts as I understand them.

So lots of people sound like the gig's up mid-June, OR if something happens where they get a hold of the guy to pay bills all could be well.

Who needs Desperate Housewives with this?

My take is wait and see, hope for the best.

That place is where I got started, and I'd hate to see them go.

But, stuff happens.

Not quite yet EL-

it's been hiccuping all night on my end (well, the dozen or so times I tried it) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Still got it here (for now)

Looks like June 6 is the last day.
It was a shock to me too and I'm glad someone else warned me about it. At least we still have SAS1946 and UltrapackIL2war sites to go to for mods.

Some of the comments about the closing are humorous to me. The circumstances aren't but the comments about praying for a web site not to close or crying about it, strike me as a little extreme. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It is hilarious looking at all of the googbye posts. I mean, it's not like the ubi forums are closing down. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Please be aware on 7th June 2010 the forums servers will be offline for approximately 4 hours.

Apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

A little ambiguous don't you think? how about four hours from..........(time)?

Oh well. AAA had rather gone downhill recently anyway.

It looks as if the AAA site will now probably be restarted elsewhere, though as yet nothing has been confirmed. From what I've seen, though there has been a bit of petty sniping, the majority of postings on other mod websites have been sympathetic. Hopefully this will encourage a more sensible attitude in the future.

Meanwhile, the modders elsewhere continue their good work. Ever seen a Mossie with folding wings and a tailhook? You'll find one at SAS - and yes, it is authentic.

A lot of modders have strange taste! There are so many historically important planes still missing that could be made. Do we really need Mossies with folding wings or that 120th version of the 109?? What about planes that appeared in large numbers that we still don't have like the KI-44 or something??

Things will definitely continue at a different address it seems.

I'll second that, though I don't know how such an initiative could be enforced. Team Daidalos has been doing a lot of work in this direction, but cannot compete with the amount of work being done overall.

I'd like seeing some of the old, boring original planes get some updates/fixes (as an example, updating the B-17 skin mapping so it doesn't use mirrored control surfaces and fix the horrid mapping of the engine cowlings - 99.9% of existing skins would still work and many others could be done much better)

^Agreed. Still waiting for an SB2C and D4Y and cockpits for the carrier based torpedo bombers, would like to see a Devastator as well (although the Swordfish was nice). BTW, I tried going to their site and it does not work at all.

The modders are doing this for free, remember. I'd agree that some choices seem odd, but realistically, we can either accept their choice, or do it ourselves - not that most of us probably have the time, patience or skills. I'd agree about the "120th version of the 109" where the difference from previous versions is so slight as to be meaningless, but I'd say that the Sea Mosquito was an interesting plane, and will have involved a heck of a lot less work than building a completely new plane from scratch. I like it.

Another factor to consider is the level of historical detail available - this may be a problem with some Japanese planes for example.

Looks like they have the database back working and I'm sure if you're already registered there, you'd likely get an email once things are ready http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

And if you weren't registered, Googling 'All Aircraft Simulations' should find them.

Edit --- actually, right now it won't, but given the way Google works, it will no doubt find it soon enough...

I am really glad. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Were all the mods perfect? Of course not because these people aren't professional programmers and are doing it on their own time.

Are a lot good? Yes indeed a lot are and I am still amazed at what they guys have accomplished.

You won't see a mig 15 or a Sabre Jet too soon from oleg now will you? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It's not the name of the site that's important, I just hope to see the talented modders emerge somewhere else again. I reckon SAS was beginning to replace AAA for individual mods, as UP and HSFX had began to replace it for packs.

Choc,
from what I have gleened from other sites the owner has gone through some very serious health problems in the recent past and could not be contacted.
There might be a genuine reason why this happened and until it comes out I would not like to comment to much.

As for the demise, I for one am sad to see it go, but like il2skins it has, so we need to move on.
