View Full Version : Why no aerial Grenades on IL-2?

In RL, the IL-2 had aerial grenades launched on parachutes that would shake a bogey off its six.
Why isnt it in the game?

I have thought of this aswell.
He he.......Imagine that, in a shalow dive with a foe on the tail, drop something that would blow up in his face. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

I tried to drop a Cassette with all those little bomblets in a slow, bunting dive to see if the enemy behind would collide with any of them. Well it didnt.....that time.

it would have been a fun thing with a grenade or two though. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

I'd say you are refering to the "DAG-10" grenade launcher in the rear fuselage of the stormoviks. It held ten grenades and could be operated by the pilot or gunner. The grenades were attached to small parachutes, which automatically opened. Grenades were set with three second fuses and would go off at a 100 metres behind the IL2. Pretty nasty to a fighter in your six. Have raised this in another post about a year ago. Not sure how common or how effective they were. Maybe thats why they are not included.

Yes yes yes - it's about time that IL2 pilots had a good winge - I get realy bored with "my P51 guns suck" or "my 190 isn't invincible indestructible and has no nuclear missiles" threads.

We realy do need those grenades and they'd be brilliant in a dogfight - particularily as since AEP my rear gunner can't hit a barn door.

What has happened is that everything is becoming a sop to the precious "fighter pilots" who get so sulky if an AI gunner smears his windscreen.

You have to remember that these AI gunners are fighting for their virtual lives - so they're gonna be realy good!

I've tried dropping AJ cassette to simulate the grenades - but it's not got the lift and will only catch a fighter that is 45? down rearwards.

Anyway - there is zero chance of them adding grenades to IL2 - firstly bombers aren't important - except as toothless targets - and secondly it would take a serious addition of code to manage a new class of weapon - i.e. not a gun, rocket or bomb - and the programmers are all busy making fighters for the American and Japanese markets.

So European bomber pilots lets have a good winge - and then let them carry on ignoring us for the next two years.

The thing that should be activated is the gunner being able to regulary direct the pilot to break left or right when an enemy is approaching from the rear. A two seater has the benefit of an extra set of eyes to spot bandits and that should count for something. And yes I know there are voice samples in pilot 5 that direct to break right and left, but I have rarely heard it used in the game. Anyone out there know how to get the gunner to use this feature more often? Has the autopilot activation any affect on it being used? Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tintin

The grenades would be an interesting addition. Who knows...

The use of your gunner as a guide would be nice too. The only thing I ever hear them say is "direct hit" and "Oh no, don't do that". Guess they're the strong silent type.

i'm guessing these grenades are like 'weights' used by the luftwaffe in the battle of britain. they were not effective.

well if the make parafrags for the pacific, basicaly the same as these.
btw ordinary bombs work, but u gotta be low
rear gunner is bloody useless, fires at target severl km away, rarely hits target, then when u switch to him, u got no ammo http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

the DAG-10 is verywell documented and was widespread in IL-2 units.
www.iremember.ru (http://www.iremember.ru)
go to the pilots section with the IL-2 pilot documentary,
we need it, its a major part of this AC and its not in the game.
how hard would it be to model in.

mmm
hard? I don't know

first off, where actually where they located?in the fuselage? or where they like a thing hung under the rear fuselage?

if it's the 2nd then it shouldn't be toooo hard because you just take the parachutes we have now and scale'm down, and the grenades are like 50 polygons, MAXIMUM.

So that won't be to hard, now if they where in the fuselage, that'd be a another part :s

WOW STENKA_69.GIAP tough words mate. If what you said didn't seem to be the truth I would have to argue your point. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Oleg sez they were not used widely enough to warrant them being added.

IRL they were not successful, and largely irrelevant after the addition of a tailgun.

Another case of the eastern front aircraft being ignored to make way for luft'46 jets and western fighters, made especially shamefull because the game is named IL-2. It would be wonderfull to see this in the game, and those of us who fly the Il-2 would certainly find it quite usefull. I fear it will never be implemented though, as no one seems interested in the eastern front anymore. I just wish that the east would be finished before we move on to "Pacific Fighters."

Would also be one of the most Embarrasing ays to get shot down in FB. Almost as bad as ramming the chute of the pilot whose plane you just downed....

Have once heard the gunner call in the enemy fighters when flying an IL2 and it did make a difference, as you could break in the direction to give him a clear field of fire. Haven't been able to duplicate it though, but it would get more IL2's into dogfight servers. As for the DAG 10 grenade launcher, I'd suspect it would be too difficult to implement and would probably be a frame rate killer.

If they added the grenades they would need to add a speech sample a la Quake 3 -
