Do you know how to use rs or is it messin up for you? If you cant figure it out you basically just choose the free option on the first page, then it'll start a count down timer, after that a colored code should show up, put the code in then hit dload and it should start. But yea Ill do that sometime today, the only thing I hate about youtube is it degrades the quality too much, but ill get it up none the less.

Ok, it's review time! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif This is going to be as in-depth as I had intended earlier, but that's because now that you have vegas I have no reason to show you how to use WMM to it's full capabilities.

I'll start this review chronologically. The beginning was pretty cool how you let the video start off with the original sound and everything; however, due to lack of footage, I wouldn't advise this. If you had an abundant abmount of footage, then yeah, it would have been awesome, but there truly isn't enough footage out there for this game to be able to do this. Because of this, you should have started it out with the music, then you would have been able to use various parts of that beginning clip throughout your video. The amount of footage you have is vital. It's better to have too much footage than not enough.

Ok, I know I said I was going to start off chronologically, but before that I want to focus on a pattern I've seen with this video as a whole. I know you said in another thread that you didn't put in much time into these, since WMM is a pretty lame program, so that's probably the result of your biggest problem with the video. First and foremost, the most important thing to remember when making fan movies is to understand what you're working with and what your job is as the editor. Naturally, fan movies are far different than actual movies and clips. With movies, the music is made to enhance the feel of the video, it adds emotion and works together. However, fan movies are different. Most people have seen the clips before, and when they watch a fan movie, they want to see an artistic and unique video with the clips they've seen prior. So putting it bluntly, you can't let a clip run with the music in the background and expect it to work. As a fan movie editor, your job is to essentially make the video work with the music, because they won't work together on their own. This is where we begin with timing.

Timing is crucial, without it your fan movie is merely a video that just so happens to have music playing in the background. When you hear strong beats in a song, time the video accordingly. Cutting clips is vital, you should never let a clip play for an extended amount of time, and most especially never let a clip play in its entirety. There are various ways you can time clips as well, which makes it fun. For example, lets say you're editing your video and you come accross a drum roll in your song. Naturally, you need to make your video go along with that drum roll, and there are different methods of doing this. One example would be a clip roll. Just take a few different clips and put them together so that they play really fast, with the same rhythm as the drum roll. You can also use flashes too, but be careful not to overdo those.

Also, to add on the timing issue, don't feel as if you have to overdo it with the effects. Effects are really cool, but never, ever, ever, ever, ever use the same effect monotonously in the same video. I can't even begin to tell you how many people do this. Variety is key, that's what people like to see. And also remember, effects are cool, but they don't make the video, they enhance it. The absolute most important thing with video making is the way you cut your clips in conjunction with the song. If you made a video without a single effect it can still be absolutely incredible if you time it properly.

Ok, having said that I will start from the top with your video. Hypothetically speaking, let's say that you had an abundant amount of footage for this game, so letting the beginning play as you did actually worked. I still feel as if there was an issue. Once the music started, you should not have let the clip continue to play, that's when things should have been changed up. If this was a movie or something, it could have worked, but even then, usually something different would have happened for the song to come in like that. Still, fan movies are completely different. Most people don't want towatch clips they've seen before, they want to see them changed up.

From this point onward the pattern usually continues, there really isn't any timing. The video was definitely entertaining and fun to watch, the music did make it seem cool, but it just didn't really quite cut it as a fan movie. I don't mean to sound critical, you're really new at this, and you didn't put in a whole lot of time, so it's definitely not bad at all considerring the circumstances; in fact, I'd venture to say that you did an excellent job under the conditions you were working with.

Above all else I see potential. I know you can really make something incredible, and you seem to be willing to put in the time and effort as well. This was definitely a good start for you to mess around with so you could get an idea, but from this point onward the best advice I can give you is to time your footage with the music. That's by far the most important aspect of fan movie making. You play guitar, so I'm sure you have great rhythm, that's definitely an advantage. Before you make a video you need to listen to the song over a few times very carefully and pay attention to the beat, rhythm, and changes in the song. These are what you'll be working with, you have to make your videos go along with it, so pointing them out beforehand will greatly benefit you.

Timing altogether is important, but I'd say beat timing is the most important.

Anyway, I wanted to give you a quick example of how to time the beginning, so I whipped something up. Naturally, you'd put in more time and do things your own way, so it would look better, but I just threw this together for the sake of time.

Nice, very helpful information, I really appreciate you taking the time to put all that into a review http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Though a lot of the stuff you mentioned ive thought about, I just didnt take the time to do, like timing the video with the music, I tryd to do it with certian small parts, but didnt do it throughout the whole video. One part I kinda got lazy on was the screenshots I put in, I wanted to have it timed and get faster and faster with the drum roll towards the end of the break, but I couldnt get the clips short/fast enough to make it look good, so I kinda said oh well and threw them in at a slightly faster speed as the music got faster. Also, I did try to make the video more like a movie, mybe more than I should have for a fan film, I like setting a strong mood/atmosphere with the music, hince why used that electronica song, it has a sort of cool/slick kind of mood to it if that makes any sense. I just like to use cinematic/electronica type music becuase it has a little stronger mood to it than say rock or something. Anyways, mybe I should of took some more time with WMM to figure out some more stuff that you can do with it that I thought you couldnt, basically I had a lot of ideas in my head I just didnt think I could do them with WMM, so I kinda just said w/e. But now I have Vegas so I shouldnt have any excuses lol. But again, thanks for your input, I didnt expect such a indepth review but I can tell your passionate which is a very cool http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Mybe I will make a v2.0 of that video with Vegas to show you all the ideas I had http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well I'm glad you liked my review. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

WMM is such a pain, I barely used it myself, and when I did it was frustrating. I've seen some pretty awesome videos some people have made with it though!

Still, with Vegas you have much more options. You had some great ideas for that video, you just weren't exactly sure how to execute them on WMM. Sounds to me like you have the skills (knowing when to time, etc.), you just needed the right program. Now you have it! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, and a tip I keep forgetting to tell you. Remember that you can render your videos with different video formats. You may have already known that, but I didn't when i first made my videos. I spent a lot of time making a video and rendered it with the default format (can't remember what it was), so by the time it was done the video was HUGE! It like like 500 MB, somewhere around that. There was no way I could get that uploaded anywhere. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Now I render my videos with the wmv format. Works like a charm. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

LOL! yea I did that same thing when I very first started using WMM, I used Fraps (video game recording software) to capture gameplay from a game I did on my first video, and each 20-30 sec clip was over 300mb each! Basically the video was over 1gb when it was done http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Anyways, another thing I love about that Vegas already is the ability to choose so many different formats like PAL 4:3 NTSC 4:3 PAL Widescreen etc. very cool stuff that I didnt notice on WMM. Oh and you prolly wont see me use tons of effects on my videos, I like to take a more simple yet effective approach to it, so id only use effects when it would improve the video, like how you did in that one vid your working on with the picture into picture thing. I hate seeing all these vids with all these cheesy effects lol.

lol! PM because you're too embarrassed to ask? That's hilarious. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

You really don't have anything to be embarrassed about. I've had people ask me how to insert clips in vegas, they couldn't even do that much, so you're fine. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Just click on the "Media Generators" tab on the bottom left of the screen, then to the left click on "text". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You can do a lot more with text than just the options they have there, just add regular effects to them if you want and manually work from there. My brother is crazy good with working with text, he's made some pretty awesome stuff!
