I've noticed when you shoot an IL2 theres a cool blast effect of metal flying off it. Is there anyway all aircraft do this when shot, at least all metal aircraft?

It does happen to other aircraft with armor plates...you don't see it as often but it does happen. The IL-2 is sort of uniquely constructed as the armor plate is a good portion of the front and part of the rear of the aircraft. Most WWII aircraft were not armored in this way...most of them relied on their structural strength to sustain battle damage and most of the European aircraft featured some sort of armor to protect the pilot...but not much else.

these blast effects are caused by bullet's bouncing off the armor of the Il-2 as stated by VW IceFire. Not all aircraft has so much armor as the Il-2. Bullets will penetrate normal aluminium surfaces.

I've often seen neat lttle sparks from around the canopy when saddled behind a FW190 ina Spit or Mustang... must be bouncing off the armourd glass or canopy rails. Nice touch!

I've read about this reflective effect of sturmoviks armour - in books of Tibor Tobak, hungarian Puma pilot - long before i played this game and first it was a very immersive experience to see this ingame http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I can show you a special blast:

Airplane crash explosions create fragmentation, just like bombs.

Perhaps the fragments are bouncing off the IL-2s own armor, just as it explodes?
