Ouchie! Did my stint back in '98 - fun but 4 months is enough. Funnily enough I went about this time of year too.

Maybe the patch will be out by the time you get back! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Good Luck,

WB.

Hi VonShlag,

Not everybody in the RAF is aircrew you know! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I was a controller in the Tower. Had a nice low level sortie in a Herc while I was there though. We also went hunting a 'Fishing Boat' which was where it shouldn't have been. Didnt find it though.

I was the Tower controller when a Tristar caused me my biggest ever scare in a 17 year career. He got airborne in VERY marginal conditions for the flight back to the UK. Just as he disappeared into the low overcast his starboard engine blew in a big way. I saw flames the length of the a/c and then he vanished into the murk. We went State2 etc etc and he informed us he was dumping fuel prior to landing back with us. By the time he had dumped enough fuel the clag had really set in and I could just about make out the taxiway in front of the Tower, I couldn't see the runway at all. He tried a PAR to one runway and then an ILS to the other and couldn't get in. He ended up diverting to Monte Video I think it was, even after dumping a load of fuel. Scared the hell out of me, especially as it was my turn to fly home 2 weeks later http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Amusingly, the pop band ShakAtak (sp?) were onboard having just completed their CSE shows - apparently the lead singer had to spend the whole flight on oxygen because she was a little 'upset'.

Anyway, enough of the war stories! Enjoy your time, you should be back before the South Atlantic winter really sets in.

Oh, and a laptop is a great idea - use some of your flying pay and treat yourself!

WB.

Edit: Tristar for VC10 - a senior moment, apologies to any 10 fans.

Hey WhiskeyBravo, got chatting to a bloke last xmas on a 'booze cruise' to calais, turned out he was an airframe fitter on RAF vc10's and said that the RR conways have a habit of lunching themselves, think it's to do with old age, and don't they make a row!

Scottmal, I've edited my original post - it was in fact a Tristar not a VC10. But yes both aircraft are ancient by modern aircraft standards and engine surges and other problems are quite common. So much for a modern state of the art air force.

Hey it's not all bad! Aren't the sheep real friendly there? You can play with them instead.

The sheep are mine clearance specialists as well. Never chase one in the dark or the bang you get might not be the one you were expecting!

Another Herc person, cool. Not RaF, but USCG C130s here. Great plane to crew on and have even worked with some of your Nimrods doing search box's around South/Central America.
