MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE !!!!!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the squad
Not a pilot was stirring, they hadn't been given the nod
The flight gear was hung in the barracks with care
In hope that some orders would soon come and be there

The pilots were nestled all snug in their cots
Dreaming of victory, and making perfect shots
Some were writing letters and thinking of kin
And longing for the day they'd fly over Berlin

When out on the field there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bunk to what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
The air raid siren wailed, I when into a dash

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to the incoming foe
From the sound in the air, I knew it had to be bad
I heard someone shout, "They're Heinkels, my lad!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly
We ran to our Spits, our mounts in the sky
I drew up my courage, and turned me around
Set my sight on the enemy, I was skyward bound

Myself and my mates took to the heavens above
To wield without mercy the battling glove
The sky became livid, a thundering roar
God help us all, this bloody awful war

Then without warning, and much to my bane
Upon my six a killer Messerschmitt came
A burst from his guns, and within quite short order
My engine was aflame, I ran for the border

When to my left, my mate I did see
Screaming down from above like a wild banshee
He tore into my enemy with a horrible sting
But his dive was too steep and he tore off a wing

I watched in pain as my savior did fall
To my radio I went, and retched out a call
"Take to the silk. Take to it now!"
"I owe my life to you, to this I avow!"

In return a quiet voice came to me
"My body is broken, from this cockpit I'll not be freed"
"Continue to mend, to ascend and to defend"
"But most of all, Merry Christmas my friend!"

Now many years have passed, I'm old and I'm gray
But I still think of that lad, what he did for me that day
Christmas for me lay not under my tree
But within the spirit of man, wouldn't you agree.

By the ring around his eyeball,
You can tell a bombardier.
You can tell a bomber pilot
By the spread around his rear.
You can tell a navigator
By his sextants, maps and such.
You can tell a fighter pilot
But you can't him much.
