In an unrelated way, got a link to this landing.

Some things are well modelled after all!

Check the airbags...

Cool video! I sure hope they got the ball turret gunner out before that landing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Exactly how it is done in the game as well. I belly land over 75% of my landings just because it is easy and also is a fast way to land, stop, and refly, before the vulchers swoop in. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

What an excellent movie. On the second veiwing I must have paused it 50 times.
The landing must have taken out the ball-turret and ruined the engines and who knows what else but I bet that plane flew again. It looked like they were urgently trying to get it out of there. Good post. Thnx. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

That would just be horrible, hopefully the guy was out.

The ball turret was jettisonable, as the upward pressure on it's mounting could break the spine of the aircraft in an otherwise 'good' belly landing. I was trying to see if the ball turret was even there. The gunner would obviously rotate the guns down and vacate the turret beforehand! It took an average of 20 minutes to unbolt and detach the ball turret.

about belly landings i have a few tricks for il2

shut down engine before touchdown,
put elevator trim slightly upwards
touch down on flat and level surface
full flaps
slowest speed passible, just before stall
make sure theres anough space around you
keep wheels in, otherwise it isnt belly http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

you should make it fine then

Yea, it reminds of a Spielberg movie I saw back in the late 80s about a ball-turret gunner who was a cartoonist and he got trapped in the ball turret and the B-17 couldn't lower the gear because of heavy damage, but he drew landing gear on a paper pad and they appeared and he was saved from being scraped into the landing feild on landing. It was a weird Twilite Zonish TV movie. Hey, I just saw it in a movie thas all.
