We all know what aircraft are supposed to sound like, but Oleg prefers to use synthesized sounds, so that's all we have and the upcoming Storm of War series will be the same.

That was great to watch and listen to.

The current IL-2 sound engine is pretty good in getting the tone and pitch right, Oleg would just need to update the sound samples to a specific engine. But given that only a few of the planes in the current series are flying as restorations, it might seem weird that some planes will have authentic sounds and most wont.

But I'm hoping SoW will sound like that video...awesome!

It probably won't sound like that video but I think they can do allot better job of making the sounds more authentic. But there is a price - heavier CPU hits if you don't have a full on sound card.

That is not the reason sounds aren't realistic. The sound engine is quite good - but compared to MIDI technology: the sound banks could be better...

IMHO only a dynamic system like we have in IL-2 is the right way. But it has to be improved in some matters.

What is particularly strange is that sounds were generally much better back in IL-2 v1.0

The sound of the real Bf109, is way more deep and gross than the sim's 109.

Wish it was a joke.

Sound is one of the few weak parts of IL2, and forgive me for believing it probably will be for SOW.

I know why Oleg prefers synth, but his sound engine is just not realistic enough to be a suitable alternative to wav loops.

As a big big fan and Il-2 owner I believe maddox has got the sounds absolutely right and all of you are absolutely totally wrong of course.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

The sounds of the 109 are obviously doctered in those You tube videos anyway, anyone can see because because they aren't in the game.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

and what are all those "unknown spooky people sounds" in this totally wrong sounding Il-2 recreation? Where are those GD people! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Blimey! I was just browsing through the forums seeing what I could find and I see this topic... with my friend's video as the discussion point!
What a small world this is!

EDIT:
Also I was wondering, although it may have already been stated somewhere; will the speed of sound be incorperated into BOB?
A plane flying past 10k away in IL2 sounds like the engine noise is originating from it's visual position, although it should actually sound like the engine is quite some distance behind the aircraft.
Or if in Il-2 a plane hits the sea 6k below you, you hear the explosion instantly, whereas in reality it would take some time for the sound to reach you.
Another example is when an enemy fires at your plane from your six, you can hear the sound of his guns firing before the bullets reach your aircraft, but this wouldn't happen seeing as the bullets are travelling faster than the speed of sound...

Well in the sound matter I must refer Wings of Power II (add-on to FSX). Has anyone heard their sounds? They are just AMAZING. The Merlin really has a soul, the Daimler actually whistles... These sounds can't even be compared with Il-2's. They are just in a whole new league. If you haven't already, please do yourself a favor and check them out. Now my question is: If the guys from Shockwave can do it so well why canĀ“t Oleg do it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif If only there was a way of importing these sound files to the Il-2 files.....

And so we get the sounds recorded for Bf109's and Spitfires/ P51's and the common WW2 planes.

Now what do we do for a Stuka?

Where do we record the Beaufighter?

Tempest?

etc etc....

See the problem here? We cannot have some samples and others using the game engine.

BTW absolutely LOVE the sound of the BF109, its my fasvourite sounding WW2 plane. The supercharger whistle gives me goosebumps!

I upgraded to an M-Audio 10-10. The biggest improvement as far as IL2 goes was in performance.
the sound is better , but the card can only reproduce what it is given.

Now I don't know if these clips are a hack or a hoax, but if it's possible to improve the sound without affecting overall performance ; it seems a lot of people will be very happy (me included).

But the ME compressor sound is too strong, not like a Diners-Benz engine, in BF cockpit the sound is very good....

Well shoot, that's similar to the situation we have now. So many of the planes share the same "simulated" sounds currently, so why not have them share the same sampled recordings? Still an improvement IMO.

GregGal

Such realistic sounds would give much more immersion to the game, it would feel less like "just a flight simulator".

CyC_AnD
09-28-2007, 04:26 AM
Il2 engine uses normal wave samples as any other sim. It just has something like EAX, an syntetizer that changes sound of original wave (probably adds doppler effect etc.)
None of samples in game (wave samples) are from real warbirds, well they might be from some cessna or smthg...

So if we can't take original sample of beufighter, we can at least take some radial engine with same amount of horse power. Sure it would sound a bit different then original, but at least not like a lawnmower...
