Saturday night, there was about a 2 hour discussion about the 1 deathkick and mission on the server. We pretty much came to the conclusion that we need to do something with the mission to make going after the objectives more appealing. So after listening to what everyone had to say saturday night and a 1 hour pow-wow Swiss and myself had to day, this is what we came up with.

We will build a campaign on a single map. Probably run a map campaign for 1-2 weeks. Each campaign will have a total of 13 maps. The first map in each campaign will be just a straight up dogfight to decided which mission will be the next one to be played. When a team wins a mission, the next mission will be an attack mission for them and the losing team will be the defenders. As long a team continues to win, they will continue to have mission objectives. When a team has driven the opposing team across the map, they will have won the campaign. Then the campaign will reset and start with the Dogfight battle again.

Here is what we have come up with for the structure of the campaigns. The map will have 7 different frontline positions. One will be in the center of the map with 3 positions north/south or east/west of the starting frontline. Each line position will have a red and blue mission assigned to it. Which mission gets played will depend on who won the last mission. When one team has pushed the other back to the edge of the map, that team will win the campaign. It will start again with the dogfight mission.

To start, we will keep with pretty much the same planesets through the entire campaign. Once we get this working, we may start doing things such are removing planes or replaceing a model with an earlier version. Another thing we may do as well is reduce a teams number of planes/pilots that they start out a mission with if they continually lose. We kicked around a few more ideas, but we need to refine them a little more.

We hope to have one of these mini campaigns done by the weekend. I am sure we will have to do some tweaking to it once it is complete. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, please email sparx at war-clouds.com and we can setup a time to meet and go over the details.

I like this idea. Sounds very realistic to me! However, since it's still "Western Front" do you think you could do a Battle of France type situation? Early 109's vs. Hurris, etc...? It might be possible with the planes we have available.

If this works out, and i think it will, we will expand this to the ToH server as well. Make mini campaigns for differnt theaters and years. We will probably do the same thing and run each mini campaign for 1/2 weeks. So basically, one week could be a Battle of France campaigne, then a Battle of Britian campaign, maybe a Pacific campaign and so on. I think you get the idea.

We are definatly going to need help building these campaigns because as you can see, its going to take alot of time and effort to get one done. So if anyone is interested in helping out, please contact me so we can work out the details. We have some pretty specific requirements when building missions that need to be followed. These are done to help mimimize lag and FPS hits as much as possible for players on the server.

This is by far the best idea you've ever had.

Progress Update:

I have established the frontline movement across our first mini-campaign. We are going to use Crimea as our first map. Here are some Screenshots showing how the lines will progress in the campaign.

www.vfs-22.net/minicampaign.htm (http://www.vfs-22.net/minicampaign.htm)

Each frontline position except for the ones that are at the extremes of the map will have two missions. Which mission that will be played depends on which team won the last mission.

Very good idea!, Can we have season changes too? Let's say start in a Spring and end in a Winter?

I like this idea. Should motivate the sides to take an active roll in "winning" the campaign. Thanks for the effort.

yep http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

would it be possible to have several campaigns going on at once?

say u start on western front, then map loads and your on eastern front, then next time desert?
the server will rember campaign status for each map, when it rotates round again http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Nice idea!

Can some of these be within a historical context though? Like a mid 1944 Normandy campaign or late 1944 winter Bastogne campaign etc?

I made a 7-map mini-campaign (scripted dogfight) based on the Kursk conflict if you guys ever want to include some Eastern content. Grab it here mates - http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/ohearns/IL-2%20Sturmovik/Missions/Dogfight/Kursk/Kursk.rar
