I was channel surfing just now, and saw U-571 on USA channel. So, my instincts told me to do a search on my DVR for Das Boot. To my amazement, it's showing Thursday at 4:30 am. I've never seen it, so I am totally excited.

Thursday will be a great day http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Tuddley, you are going to love it! For your information, there are several versions of Das Boot: the original theatrical release, a Director's Cut which added footage and enhanced the original audio and the full series, which I do not have. From my understanding, Das Boot was orginally about six hours long and was shown as a series. I have the original and Director's Cut which I highly recommend as it has comments and extra features.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

@ Kaleun- The version that I'm recording is 5 hrs long. It doesn't specify whether it is subtitled or not, I hope it's in German with English subtitles. I think an English dubbed version would spoil it for me.

I will keep my eyes open for the Directors Cut version, probably have to buy it from Ebay or Amazon.

@ Fong- I will try to Identify the U-boat Type. I'm just totally interested in how well SH3 compares to the actual look from inside the sub. And the crew uniforms. Actually, just everything in general. I can't wait.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That must be the original production that you are going to record; guessing so as it's five hours long. You'll get to see everything, then. I've only seen what made it into the first two cuts. One thing I'll guess, though, is that you'll appreciate any of those Das Boot sound files that get modded into SH3. When you see the bosun yelling hop, hop, hop! you'll gain a new appreciation for the crash dive routine.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I love Das Boot! I have the Director's Version and have watched both VHS tapes many many times.

If you are ever in Chicago, head to the Museum of Science and Industry where the U-505 is. Last time I was there I was in grade school, but I am planning a trip back soon to see how it all comes together.

I have the fulll length version that was first aired in the 6 part TV episodes. I used to have the Director's Cut but the full version IS the one to own in my opinion.

Tuddley, you will absolutely love it - regardless of the version.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

actually the only part about the movie that still confuses me is:

Why did he send an extra torpedo into the wounded tanker instead of shelling it?

And it took a while to figure out the airplane incident -&gt; radar.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I saw the five hour version on TV and have the Directors cut. I must say that I think the TV version was better.
Plenty on Amazon and Ebay, if you have no luck I will send you mine although I think US/UK DVD's are not compatable.

@ KUrtz- Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Have to research the idea of US/UK compatibility.

The full TV mini-series version may not have the enhanced sound, but it still sounds great.

If the film leaves you wanting more, read the book. It's superb and answers many of the questions that may pop in to your head when watching it on TV.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I hope he is prepared for the experience.

At the end of 5 hours, you WILL feel as part of the crew of that Uboat. Remember this time before you see the movie, Because you won't be the same. It will change you, I can't tell you how, you will have to see for yourself. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I remember watching the series on tv years ago and loved it. I bought it on video when it came available but it was the movie version that had been dubbed into English. I didn't like it much and never watched it again but I recently bought the mini series on dvd which had the English subtitles and to me, this is the definitive version by far. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

fongfongfong: the FangShu?? (coup de grace) was usually delivered using a torpedo, quicker and easier to fire one then to man the deck gun, fire off a load of rounds then button it up and leave. bonus if a destroyer is still in the area.

as for Das Boot. i have the directors cut, its something stupidly long and is a seriously kick *** film. also i'd NEVER try a U-boat special.
and i'd never eat Fritz's toejam either.

great film that hammers home the u-boats plight. if you get the dvd the extra's are very good. they actually built a U-boat from scratch but only one side like a model so they could film inside it.

enjoy!

Something I just realized about Das Boot...

Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock was the captain of U-96 at the time when war correspondent Lothar-G??nther Buchheim (author of the 'Das Boot' book) went on patrol with U-96.

Nearly 40 years later, Willenbrock was Wolfgang Petersen's historical/technical advisor during the filming of 'Das Boot'. So the film has a double-dose of authenticity - Willenbrock was actually there during the events on which Buchheim's story is based!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I have completed my BdU orders, and watched Das Boot. WOW ! ! ! What an experience.

Now, I must climb aboard my new IXC and find revenge for the crew of U96. My heart was broken at the end, especially for Ullman, for he Widowed his French Fiancee before they were ever to marry. And for Johann, seemed to be everyones favorite crew member.

After spending 5hrs with these guys, I grew attached to them, and now I must do a patrol in honor of them.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
