See how the fighter just blows up? You think that it was hit by 30mm?

Possibly, I'd think it's a hit to the petrol tank, 20 or 30 mm shell.

There was a video posted about three years ago which displayed a longer version of the guncam. The plane was a Fw-190 under attack by a P-47 and it was the general consensus that the Fw-190 was carrying Mk-108 shells which detonated from .50 cal fire.

yeah i think col.BBQ is right,if you watch just before it explodes the bullets(look like 50 cal strikes iv seen in P-51 guncams footage) "walk" up the right wing to about the where the cannon would be then boom! it's certainly one hell of an explosion.poor pilot never stood a chance.

Not necessarily even a cannon shell IMO, a single rifle caliber bullet into a right spot could produce the same result under right circumstances... Thing is that we don't (or maybe extremely rarely) see this in IL2.

Tx for sharing, never saw this one before. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

My first thought too was that it seems to start in the wing (magazine detonation) but the sheer amount of flame suggests the fuel tank - it was probably both, one after the other.

If you want to see good footage of a single MK108 shell hitting a fighter (albeit stationary) then click the link in my sig http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What about the B17 at 4:30 in this movie? I always thought that those were 30mm shells hitting it.

In your video, that's definitely 108s

I do think there are a lot of 30mm hits in here?

Doubt it. Lots of early war fighters, and not enough destruction to be 30mm.

Here's more of the same.

Sorry for going off topic, but the fighter (Hurricane?) at 0:30 has it's landing gear going down when it's hit. Some mechanical malfunction? Did stuff like that happen more often?

Yea, I`d say fuel tank explosion set off by the bullets. I can`t be certain, but the fire ball looks almost liquid, hence, fuel.

Grim.

Yup. Even if we built whole cockpits around our computer and hooked it all up with displays in the windows and everything, you can never recreate the feeling that maybe you'll die in this sortie, or maybe get your legs blown off. In the case of IL-2 pilots, that was a probably.

Probably a tracer round hitting a partially empty tank. Detonates the fumes as a fuel air bomb, and the spreading fuel at that point also catches and burns.

I was flying with na IL2 rigth now, diving on a airfield to strafe parked aircraft. I think I probably got a direct flak hit on the engine and it caugth fire. I don't had time even to think for a second, as the engine caugth fire and the aircraft just blow up in less then one second.
