Speaking in general, what is most important for you when considering the planeset, or the criteria for inclusion of planes (or exclusion, as the case may be)?

I really enjoy the historically accurate matchups but It would be great to see some of my favorite what ifs also.

What if Japan had been able to hold out and no A bomb. A divided Germany means former Luft. pilots flying for allies 109's vs A6M's..190's vs Mitsubishi J2M's.

Even better, Japan falls 1st,U.S Navel airpower brought to bear on Nazi Germany. F6F's & F4U's vs Luft.....sweet

#2 definitely without a doubt. Historical accuracy is by far the most important to me but I do understand not including Me-262, etc. so I guess a small dash of #1 as well.

I voted 2 of course, but it's funny.

80% for historical planesets and on Hyperloby it's just the contrary 80% of the servers (in fact it's even more) with non historical planesets http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's really like the same thing when you ask someone what kind of music he's listening too: Bach, Bethoven, Mozart. But at home, it's rather Britney Spears or rap music http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It doesn't seem too surprising that 80+ percent of us say we're more interested in historical planesets (so far). That's probably one of the two reasons we stay with this sim, the other being an attraction to (virtual) flight. Would players interested in "uber" or "fantasy" sets spend time with FB? Or hang out in this forum? I suspect it would be both frustrating and boring for them.

My children, who have watched my affliction with flight sims for decades, will occasionally fire up FB. But they don't have an interest in mastering CEM, or even taking off or landing; they want 'targets' and pretty airplanes that won't stall or spin at bad moments. They can't quite comprehend why I like old airplanes, anyway.

On the other hand, I have trouble understanding ... or caring about their fantasy games.

#2 The history is what it's all about. I don't even mind if the numbers are uneven, if it's historically accurate.

Anything else, you might as well play Quake.

Good topic, Stig! S!

Let me qualify my response.

I answered number 2 because I largely want to see historical matchups of planes which generally means similar capabilities (although not always). The best dogfight servers are the one that allow for a good selection of aircraft but only in a historical slice rather than an all encompasing lineup.

Fantasy aircraft are interesting and I want to see them in the lineups but only in certain conditions. The first is that aircraft like the 109Z do not count in a 1945 planeset (based on capability) and therefore should ONLY be present in a 1946 setup. The reason is capability and performance...at present only the La7 is fast and manuverable enough to catch a 109Z on even footing...every other type I've flown has to have an enourmous energy advantage and the best turning ability in its class. I suspect only the Spitfire XIV and maybe the Tempest (although the manuverability of this plane may not be enough) when we get these may currently be able to catch a 109Z.

I use the 109Z because my current distaste for them but there are other examples. Whatever the instance....some attention should be paid to balancing of fantasy aircraft and the use of historical planesets. Both are sorely lacking...

...and also to point out that server map changes can bring in a new planeset. That'd be great so we can go between 1941 and 1945 in a few rotations.

(1) Because FB Luft simmers consider early Bf-190B, C, and D as "Fantasy Planes that don't belong in WW2 flight sim whaaah WHAAAH"...

...and...

(2) I am very attracted to TargetWare's new onwhine Pacific campaign where Japanese decide to change code in 1942 (in TargetWare's MiG-3U Over Rabaul campaign)...

I Voted for Fantasy.

I prefer historical planesets. I do not enjoy engaging Allied AC with Allied AC. I guess it is my age showing, but the LW will always be the "bad guys"...

What can I say, my father was USAAF.
Just the way I see it.

Something is wrong here. Where are all those historical servers?

Good Point!
I was wondering when some one was going to point out the Obviouse.
(Where are all the Historical Servers)
I think we fell victim to the number of people trying to Host in the Hyper lobby.
I dont know about other time Zones, but in mine you can usualy see about 50% of the Visible server slots taken up by Hosts with only the Host in the game.
Usualy they are running Arcadish settings like no **** pit view allowed.
Do not get me wrong however Im all for Outside views, as I am not the only one who enjoys the inherant Beuty of the Game.
We just dont allow Icons or Padlock and you have to shoot from inside the **** pit, using the proper gun sight.

I have suggested before perhaps somebody should speak to Jiri about doing somthing with the Hyper Lobby.
Like if you host a server, unless somebody joins the Server say within 15 minutes, BOOT from the Hyper lobby, so you can keep those Host types turning over, or limit the number of Hosts who can host certain types of settings in the Hyper Lobby as well.
Although I think the former is more practical.

Cheers

I'm not voting on this one as you don't have an option for me. You see I sometimes want a historical match, sometimes I want a hard and close fought battle and sometimes I'm in the mood for blowing stuff up. Consequently I'll choose a mission based on the mood I'm in rather than by a fixed formula. I love the diversity in flying styles this sim offers. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I voted 1.

if flying online you want a good challenging match up. Now I prefer it when it's historical.
If it's neccessary to give the Reds their latest plane & the Blues a slightly used model-like what the germans gave the Fins/Hungarians etc. then that's fine.

I don't mind flying inferior planes for a while. but if there are no mission goals etc then it gets pretty boring after a while. And flying superior planes kinda cheapens any victory you might achieve.

Agreed, Tully. Mostly 1,2,3,4 for me. My Jug suffers a lot from the late war uber planes, but against it's historical adversaries, it does quite well, especially the 1943 D-10. Big, tough, and fast with a great fighter shredding loadout..... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif
