I know wingsails exist, and have seen a few pictures of them.

Not much, but enough to lead me to congratulate you on your boat-building enjoyment, and wish you post some pics of it, too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Cheers,
S.

About this much <------>

Their very existence was unbeknownst to me.

Google is my friend.

Bald pirates usually wore large golden earrings...

Either that or a "Walrus" moustache...

Make it a couple of pics and one more, for the fans, will ya, Baldie?

Baldie, I have just three words about this:

Several racing sailboats have used carbon fibre "wing" sail installations.

Also many much smaller boats...

Baldie, check this. (http://www.solarnavigator.net/wing_sails.htm)

Baldie, as long as you're hoping to acheive > 20 knots on an inland waterway a wing sail is just what you're looking for. I would also recommend a Mr. Fusion water jet for slack wind conditions (just in case).

Alternatively, if you have a surfeit of agricultural labour in your party of Kentucky perhaps you could hire a team of rowers for a negotiable sum a la Greek Bireme?

Geeze should have known you were from KY Baldie-lol...I'm up in Covington http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif All sails (well not square rigged or spinnakers) act as wings to some extent when sailing with the bow at less than 180 to the wind. The curve of the sail is similer to that of a single-surface hang glider and operates on the same principle as any other wing. In fact in many ways a modern sailboat which is sailing with any degree of heading into the wind "flies" like an airplane - the sail is one "wing", the "Keel" is another (and much smaller because it is operating in a much denser medium) the hull is the fuselage and the rudder acts as vertical stab and ELEVATOR as it changes the angle of attack of the sail. That little wingboat looks awesome - I say build one like that once your skiff is finished!

Yeah i'm over in shelbyville. im right between louisville and frankfort. i reckon 2.5 hours from you. maybe i'll sail up the ohio?

im looking at these rigid wingsails and thinking a small one would be a hoot. I just dont know how to figure needed dimensions.

check these guys out:

Wings? I like mine with hot sauce.

Wingsail building is the first stage to home built aircraft, it's suicide. My advice, sell the boat, buy a nice badminton set.

Hire enough of 'em and go waterskiing.... Don't forget to hire a really big, bald bloke with a drum, and a couple of mean guys (to ensure maximum performance) with whips. Think of them as an engine management system.
