View Full Version : Enabling skin downloads--ideas for a better way???

I love the historical skins that folks have created for the community. It's a dream to fly Kepford's Corsair, or Galland's 109, or whatever.

Unfortunately, this is only viable offline. Mainly because online servers try to reduce lag (and spawnlag) by turning off skin downloads (as it has been proven that this causes problems...won't get into the details, but enough folks have reported testing it as true).

But secondarily, I find it to be a significant disadvantage to fly the late war Allied (specifically US) planes because their gleaming aluminum skins stick out so much. In the war, the savings in weight on paint improved performance (not modelled in game). Also, their numerical superiority in the late part of the war made it more feasible to have bright colors and bare metal, as they were escorts designed to attract attention away from the bombers.

I believe we need ideas on making this work, either for the current game many of us play (the whole merged 4.01 thing) or for the future (like BOB).

I'll throw a couple of ideas out there to get this started:
CURRENT
C1. A basic set of skin packs that we could all download (zip'd up) that would add some camo skins for all aircraft (a desert, a green, a water, and a winter).
C2. Have online servers that have websites host these files and require the users to install them. Maybe make them only the 512K skin size.

FUTURE
F1. Have an option for 512K skin downloads only (not the 1 Mb)...maybe this would help?
F2. Design a better way to handle the skins...does it have to be a bitmap? What about if a jpeg (or some such compressed format) was being swapped by the game to everyone's computer and then your local computer converted the file to the .bmp format locally?

Anyone else have any helpful ideas on this matter?

Thanks.

Compression on skins does not help, will take longer and more resurces to compress, send and decompress a Jpeg then send a bitmap.
I think 512x512 skins create no lag.the size of 512x512 skins is only 257k, compared with 1meg for 1024x1024. In the original IL-2 there was no problem with skin downloads for online.
I think a good idea would be to have the server set the size of the skin. This way you could have the host set the skin size to 512x512.
But i may be wrong here.
