Hello,

I was wondering if there's any way (aside from using TrackIR maybe ...) to see the clock on the I-16 cockpit? Only time I can have a partial look at it is when pulling lots of Gs ...

Also, was the Type24 version available (historically speaking) at the same time than the Type18, or was it a replacement of the later type?

Thanks in advance,

You would not only need TIR, but this sim would need to support 6DOF which it doesn't.

Thanks for the reply -HH-Quazi .. I guess it's a bit of a bummer :-\

As for types, well, the Type 18 is older than the Type 24, but both were in service in June 1941, when Operation Barbarossa started. They were also a few even older Type 10 still around.

Thanks DuxCorvan. So it's "safe" to assume that each squadron had a mix of Type 18 and Type 24 by 1941?

Well IIRC the real difference between Type 18 and 24 was only the engine (more powerful on the latter), the broad mass of both types had the 4xShKas armament seen on the Type18 ingame, the 2xShVaK 20mm cannons were rather rarely seen and such equipped I16s were preferrably used in the ground attack role...

just my 2 cents

Most squadrons had more of the 18 model, the model 24's that were in service but were used in ground attack until, being replaced by the new IL-2s in October of 1941.

The type 24 also had a more powerful engine and was able to carry a bigger bomb load. It was used as a bomber interceptor along with the I-153P.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to find the "exact" (to the month) availability within the VVS of the Type 24 ... All I can find is that it was available in 1939, but I'm wondering if some of the squadrons were equipped with this model in spring of 1939 (prior to the operations against Japan)?

How many I-153P actually flew?

Good question! Well definitely very very few, same for 20mm equipped I16s - too bad that you kind of bump into them all too often in the Barbarossa DGEN campaigns. It would have been nice if Oleg gave the Type24 the same 4xShKas armament as seen on the Type18 and made the I16-SPB the only cannon Rata...

Wasn't there a Type 28 I-16 also? I think I remember reading about the career of a Soviet ace who flew type 28s. He also flew Hurricanes, P-40s and then later the P-39.

I haven't been able to find any precise date of beginning of service for the Type 24, but I did come across the following web site (I'm sure this isn't new for most of the forum http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ):

http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/aces.htm

Which have some rather good contents (IMHO) on I-16 and I-153 operations from the Spanish war to 1945.

Finally found a reference to entry in service dates for the I-153 and I-16 Type 24:

I-153 : June 39
I-16 Type24 : September 39

... so the Type 24 we have in the game is in fact a Type 28?

Does anyone have any more sources on the I-16 Type 24's armament? Not doubting, but would like to read more about it.

Didnt the Type28 use a pair of ShKas MGs in the cowling and a single UB 12,6mm MG firing through the engine/prop spinner!?
