I haven't yet experieneced this.

R makes the radiator larger, smaller. Is the cowl armor the flap? If so, what does it protect?

Cowl flaps are given a very strange name ("cowl armor") in the controls menu. I'm guessing it was a translation error.

Cowl flaps/radiators have nothing to do with armor or protection. The more you open your radiator, the more air gets into the engine and cools it down. However, opening your cowlflaps/radiator disrupts the streamlined airflow around a plane and will slow you down a bit.

Low airspeed, high throttle (climbing) = open
High airspeed, low throttle (cruising/diving) = closed

I also think it is a bug... likely wrong translation... what radiator have to do with armor http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif? However , nothing's changed from the original IL-2 release. There is still cowl armor/flaps in controlls menu, and it's very much likely that we're not the only ones spotting this problem, so I see something smell here. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It is refering to two seperate things, both Cowl Flaps (and/or radiator flaps) and Armor Flaps. Cowl/Radiator flaps are self explanatory, Armor Flaps are 'plates' that can be closed/opened on some aircraft to protect the radiator from enemy action.

The Il-2 was the only documented aircraft with this feature in Il2, and this was back in the original Il2. In origianl Il2, you actually got MORE cooling from radiator CLOSED, OPEN placed the armor flaps to protect the radiator, but reduced cooling. This may (I believe so) have been changed with some patch to behave more like other radiator controls, (ie, OPEN is more cooling), but it is unknown what effect the armor flaps have now, if any.

Since FB, and especially with AEP, no one has delved very deep into the Il-2 aircraft phenomenon (the 'oilcooler' has undergone numerous changes, so the 'armor flaps likely did too), so it is anyones guess whether it still has 'armor flaps' on the radiator, or how they work (automatic, pilot controlled, radiator controlled, hard to say).
