It's X-mass time and I have decided to make someone truly happy.
That someone is my uncle, who has only one true computer love - Flight simulators.

My mother once asked him to help her with cleaning the windows and I made a mistake. I showed him an IL-2 and told him how to fire up the computer.
I was away for a week or so and after my return my mother told me he spent most of the time "flying".
Since he is rather elderly gent and clueless about computers I have built him a decent computer and then I decided to throw in a little extra surprise.

This has been my project for the last month:

An ordinary office chair which I modified for Saitek's X-52 control system.

Wow http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

That is awesome Messervy, excellent work there http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif It looks as if it was made by a company and not your own handy work.

Maybe it could be a business venture for the future? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That looks absolutely cool http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

And an awesome idea http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Must be very comfortable in it. I have the X-52 here and its a very cool stick for flightsims.

I see you own the X-52 Pro ?

By chance, Celeon is working on a tank simulator chair at the moment....

Here is what ive achieved so far

No, no....I designed the thing, made the handrests from the Styrodur but the leather upholstery IS a work of a professional.
As well as the rough cuting and welding of the steel plate for pedals.

This is why the idea of a business venture is postponed for the time being, since the price of this unique piece is a bit to high.

My estimate was if I could cut the price for handrests and pedal plate to 150€ it would be worth investigating.
Here in Slovenia a chair like that would cost you arround 300€ and add to that a price for Sitek system which is about one half of that, you are still looking at a hefty, one might argue an "enthusiastic" price of 600€. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Though every prototype is expensive I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

They always are, mind you refining the design and sourcing cheaper components might bring the price down. But, something like this would never really be mass produced. Think of it as the Aston Martin's of chairs, each one of those is hand built and never rolls off a production line - your chair could be considered in the same league or prestige and enthusiast chairs!

Yes that is X-52 Pro which is basicaly the same design with "UGLY" choice of LED color (Green, Red or Amber).
The only difference is illuminated display at the throttle quadrant and more precise manufacturing.

@ GG

The main problem is the fact that I live in a center of the city and not in a house, otherwise I would temporarily commandeer the garage and produce some 10 or 15 chairs to see if they would sell.

As with everything "produced" at Messervy towers - the weight is a problem. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe I should team up with Celeon (He is afterall a German and they know a thing or two about tracked vehicles).
Together we could produce a self-proppelled one.

Thats a good idea Messervy !

Celeon has lots of ideas for a tracked vehicle. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It should have at least 5000 mm of armour on all sides which will make it around 2000 tons heavy so we need the tracks of a coal mine excavator and the main gun should be AT LEAST be a 800 mm artillery gun and of course it would have lots of AA missile launcher on its roof and....................

Messervy, I am also a Flight Sim enthusiast. I would be glad to Beta Test one of your prototypes http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif . You'll also have a place to stay, and you could visit Disneyland while you're here http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I must say, I am jealous of your Uncle. You should also get him interested in Flight Simulator X, I highly recommend it. I would be willing to join him online and give him flying lessons(FSX has shared aircraft capability).

Got to say, I have the X52pro and have it fixed to a board across my knee when I use it.

Yours is absolutely amazing and your Uncle is indeed one lucky person.

Can I also say that your room looks like Mission Control for the 1st Mission to the 'Sun', very impressive.

That's what the German "coal scuttle" in the background is for. Surprised none of you commented on that one. I think Messervy's uncle is a Germanophile.

I've been doing some digging in my family tree and I find I am distantly related to Messervy through my great grandfather's mistress....

Hey, it was worth a try; if it worked, maybe Messervy would build one for me, too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There's a Canadian company which markets a similar setup for home flight sim fans. Although from the pics on this site, they are not as luxuriously padded as the "Messervy Prototype Mark IA."

Very cool Messervy.
That set-up would really enhance the feeling of reality.
I guess us mere mortals will have to wait a few years yet until we can have such a rig.

@ Maverick_U2007

The room has been constantly "upgrading" since 1999.
There is only one addition to be made:
A Matrox triple head monitor system. Simmilar thing as suggested by Kaleun1961.

Don't be jealous.
My uncle is a very humble and modest man who had more than a fair share of mishaps in his life.
He is allways willing to lend a helping hand, no matter what time of night it is. He spent great deal of his childhood in foster homes, he lives alone and some years ago he lost his job. Now he's just short of retirement age and lives on a social security - not much to envy I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
