As I had to defer Uni. At a supermarket, for 6 hours I sat there going endlessly over beurocratic paper work and health and safety. Im thinking theres no way in hell am I doing this for the rest of my life.

My attacks I had a while back wernt serious (confirmed inner ear infection), and I am off to Paris next month. So someone talk me out of joining the French Foreign Legion. I could pass the basic physical requirements, and can keep my head screwed on in just about anything which doesnt include suddenly going very dizzy. Yep its a stupid idea, but hey. Or I could go to uni and be surrounded by middle-class hippies.

Can you take the constant beatings and brutality? If so,then join La Legion Estrangere!
Something I thought about very seriously in my youth, but dreams seldom live up to reality.I would say stay at uni,get a good education, get a good career, and enjoy life. The 'enjoy life' bit is the most important part.

Yeah I grew up in a school where I had to fight not to be hung upside down on the bus everyday, to keep my food and to keep my arse safe whilst in the PE rooms. Its probably nothing in comparison but most kids my age are wet farts lol. I recently got my Mountain Leader Summer, Single-Pitch Award, Im a good shot, and a proficient kayaker so I figure well I ought to challenge myself in this sort of area even more. Its what im good at and what I enjoy. I feel like a fish out of water doing paper work lol.

No fun and no play is right. Billy has nailed it.

Don't do it, Airmail.

If you ask for validation on a life making decision, on what other people think is good for you, you dont have the heart to do it.

The legion is that woman that lures you, and if you dont dance with her, you will never know what did you miss.

not sure how old you are or what (besides aviation) youre into but...

if you really hate paper work any military is not for you (unless you want to be a **** sucking terrorist, im pretty sure those pieces of **** dont have paperwork).

From what i understand the legion is a life style, i dont know the contract parameters but from what ive seen it is akin to slavery (i.e. youre considered good enough to die for france but not good enough to be considered a countryman).

Im actually not sure why anyone would want to be in the legion but as a last resort for some small semblance of freedom if youre in a bad way.

someone earlier said something along the lines of not knowing what youre missing if you dont try (not the exact words but it carries the same meaning).

the problem with that particular piece of advice is that once youre in "youre in", and again i dont know the particulars for the "all volunteer , all not French" foreign army, but i would guess checking into youre own countries armed services should be looked into as you might find some interesting perks

Aimail I feel your pain.

I'm temping at Argos, because I can't go to uni till next year. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

BUT, make no mistake, University is the best place in the world to be. If you can go, do it.
I did it once, and I'm going back for more.

Complete career direction change.

University is like living in another world... no responsibility, only to learn.

Everything I have heard leads me to believe that everything about the gap between the romance and the reality of Armed Forces applies doubly so for the Foreign Legion. I would recommend against it.

I knew some people who joined FL....

Thing is not one of them stayed there for too long.

You shouldn't do it, but if you really want go for it.
A new experience for you, so you can learn new things..... just it's not gonna be easy.

A friend of mine - ex-Explosive Ordinance Brigade in the British Army joined the Legion for a spell but ended up sneaking away one night. He'd been sick and they hadn't allowed him a chance to recover, just kept working him and working him so he thought sod that for a lark and never looked back (actually he did - many times, very very carefully).

If I had other options I would take them.

Of course, and he now has a cast iron case to never visit France again...so it can't be all bad http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Seriously this is not the be and end all people think...... The Legion is not a getaway you think it is, It is hard and no school squabble will ever come near to it......... Heck why not join the UK military if it floats your boat, you to will get away to hot sunny climes, see lots of sun and sand as well as exchanging cultures and bullets with the natives..... The RAF would give you the engineering you want http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and you could always apply for the likes of the BOB flight, but its a dead mans shoes job there

As ex RAF neither of the two above options are particularly appealing these days.........

So do not do it..... to think school life makes you tough enough to take on the Legion is a bit nieve...

Pm'd you those job details will dig out some more for you, there are lots of colleges in the UK that do aero engineering courses, my nephew is on one now, also look at the likes of Airbus and RR for apprentiships...

oh, I forgot to say...

Welcome to the real world.

College, University all fantasy liberal land where even lecturers preach rather than teach so that kids can go out into the world with rubbish in their heads and later get slapped down when real life comes and teaches the real lesson.

Sounds harsh, but it`s true, cos i went through it all.

Find the job where you can make the most legal money; in your professional life nothing else matters.

Leisure and family life may then safely be for your own and your beloved.
