Flying real light aircraft, and even the $50 milllion dollar sims, sound is an important clue to speed and power setting. WWII USN Pilots learned to fly in the venerable "Yellow Peril" Stearman, open cockpit biplane. Wind sound and buffet was an important clue for the seat of the pant neophyte. This remained true in the higher performance canopied aircraft, which for carrier operations were flown for takoff and landing with the "hood" back. The sound is a buffeting much like that you get in a convertible, or with a motorcycle with a good windscreen. It gives you a pretty good idea of your airspeed without a confirming glance at the instruments.

Prop noise is a big component of aircraft noise, and seems to not be well modeled either.

Sound effects has always been a weakness of the IL-2 series. Hopefully this will all change with the arrival of PF, but not likely http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
