View Full Version : Highest possible altitude?

I reached an altitude of Sixteen Thousand and two hundred fifty meters with a Hienkel?(sp) Lerche. I would've probably reached a higher altitude but was running out of patience.

is there a hard capped altitude? or is each individual aircraft limited by it's realistic capability?

thx

I went 600,000 meters in a Me-163.

I had the difficulty on easy.

Well, what's real and what's not in this virtual world.
It's all imagination and simulation...

I reached a 25,000m with Me-163 and Bi-1 a while back. Don't know, maybe you can go even higher?

I did the same, but i got bored of climbing when i hit 100,000ft.

I made it to 60,000m before I got too ambitious and spun out.

The highest I got was:

3194100 meters.

that is a bit more than 3000 km. (in a P40)

I have the screencapture but I don't know how to post it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

ok let me try:

Well now I'm a bit upset as i was hoping for realism. Also, i never play the game on easy settings and never intend to.

So as far as altitude goes, i guess this aspect of the game is a complete disappointment, unless of course these screen shots are with cheats on easy mode.

Haha cheating is not allowed.
You can create a mission and manually edit .mis file so that you start at 20km alt for example.

I guess that for this kind of test we need some fighters with good high altitude performance, and I for one am interested to see what is the highest altitude someone managed to do with any fighter type (without cheating of course).

I remember doing almost 12000m in a P-47D27 (ground start).
Didn't pushed it to the limits tho.
Long time ago...

The only limiting factor to altitude is how much fuel you have. Because this game was originally designed as a low level ground pounder sim, high alt stuff (anything above 6-7k call it), isn't modeled correctly, and is very, very simple. That's why you can basically go as high as you have the patience for.

The -163, Bi-1, and Bi-6 are the best to test this with, since they'll climb the fastest.

We spent some nights running competitions a couple of years back - If I remember right you could get an ME163 to 52 000 metres from take-off with full difficulty -speedbar and externals.

It may have changed with 4.09b.

The world looks very strange from up there and the easiest way down was to spin for 40k.

I'll add the 163 to the north island on the =89.GIAP=SQUAD server, post back your screenshots.

yes it's a bit more than 3 million meters.

It was during an online game and way back. I don't know what version of IL2. It must have been a version without display of the units in the speedbar. But I remember that I was suddenly pushed higher and higher without doing anything myself. Had no response in control elevator and later found out that the ailerons were also not responsive anymore which is why I typed the comment in the chat window. I think I could have gone higher because I was still climbing although I couldn't do anything about it, but I thought enough is enough and I pressed esc. to quit the game. But not before taking a photo.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We have an atmosphere model that changes density from ground to 10 km altitude but above that all the same.
We have an atmosphere model that changes density with temperature from ground up, winter to summer, north to south
all makes a difference even day and night which is real, ask any pilot.

How many who are so shocked about the open top even know the difference between cold air and warm?

Yes I am sure there are IL2 fights at over 40,000 ft every day.. not!

I reached an altitude of some 638,000 meters once if I can remember correctly. The earth turned into a black sphere and lets just say it was weird. At around 300,000 meters or so it seemed like gravity flipped because instead of fighting to gain more altitude, the plane seemed to be pulling upward. I was using an me 162 which is probably no surprise and I had unlimited fuel set. At around 600,000 it started becoming hard to climb once again. I don't know if there is another barrier you can break through where it will start pulling up again and I was going to check that out but I had already been flying for some 20-30 minutes or more to get that high and had to eat dinner or something so I just nosedived until my plane exploded. Silly me didn't take any screenshots as I was just messing around anyways and didn't think about it. It all started with me doing a quick mission against 2 B1s. I started to climb to elude them and was impressed with the 162s ability to go pretty much vertical so I kinda got sidetracked from the fight and became obsessed with seeing what the plane could really do.

Which is exactly why we need to be able to see rivets on the floor plates of jeeps in this game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I guess nobody else went higher than 3 million meters in the game. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I just now made it to 52,000 meters in an Me163 starting from 10,000 meters with ammo-empty, and I managed to land safley. I geuss I can brag about that part. The landing part. That was fun. Woopty-do.
