View Full Version : Am I The Only One Who Would Like A Flyable U-2?

I mean think about it. You could have a lot of fun with the U-2 if you could fly it. The low-level night missions alone would be worth it.

Besides, it would be fun just to fly around. Slow old-fashioned biplanes are a gas. (I thought of this in fact while flying a Tiger Moth in FS2K2.)

Wonder if there's any chance anybody's ever going to build a cockpit for the U-2? It would certainly make more sense than some of the projects in the works. In the game already, for that matter.

It would be really cool if a group of women players formed a squadron of Night Witches.

yeah U2 would be good - Bi-planes rule http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

by the way the utimate biplane for FS2002 is David Eckert's freebie 1930's US Navy Stearman trainer. It's available for download at www.flightsim.com (http://www.flightsim.com). It won an award last year. It even has a hstorically correct 3D virtual cockpit.

Yeah, I've got the Stearman too. Great plane, lots of fun to fly. The best biplane for FS2K2? Could be. Arguably anyway. Though there's a new payware Beech Staggerwing that looks awfully promising.

I've got an Antonov An-2 that's a lot of fun but the original model needed a lot of work - I had to build a panel for it and even then the engine startup sequence is a little funny. And no VC. Too bad, because it's a great plane.

But getting back to FB, the more I think about it the more I want that flyable U-2. For one thing, it would make an excellent trainer for new users with no virtual flying experience, wouldn't it? And the sim needs something like that, I think.

And the idea of a bunch of women users forming a "Night Witches" squadron is utterly wonderful.

Any builders out there reading this?

I woul love to fly it.

You take off slowly, then you start looking for your way to the front line.

Keeping it as low as possible, you go looking by the riverside, trying to spot enemy forces on the area they designated you to recon. Seems the most inlikely place to you, as you have been there many times before.

Everything seems quiet, then a shell explodes close by and you see AAA firing at the other side of the river, hidden by the trees.

You bank hard and try to get far from it, while circling around to count how many artillery pieces they have, and what other effectives are located there. man it is a dangerous time. Sweating like mad, you keep your hands firmly on the stick, trying to avoid the next shell. You talk to your observer/gunner and exchange impressions on the ammount of enemy forces. Once you have the info, you move further away, and make a radio call to base (all coded), but suddenly, you gunner calls fighters, so you bank away hard while he/she fires at you...overshooting and flying off like a manic demon.

Now, time "run", maneouvering as hard as you can, while your mate fires at the fighter everytime he cames by. Some rounds go through you fabric wings, but the shells neither catch fire nor explode. Thanking the lord, you move low over the trees, to make it harder for the enemy to have clear or easy shots. You call for help on the radio, and it is granted (what a change!): 2 friendlies are close by and proceed to your area....pah, pah, pah! The wing close to your head has three big holes from cannon shells, and it is smoking...also, some fuel (the gunner tells you shouting) is comming from under the belly... you are hit.
The gunner keeps firing short burst to the bastard, which keeps trying hard to take you down, and you keep moving hard to negate that.

Tah, tah tah, pfiw, pfiw..rounds pass by you again, like mosquitos flying at 500 km/h..and suddenly, you gunner starts to cheer...the enemy is smoking (slightly) and expands far from you, as at the same time you see two familiar shapes flying towards it..friends.
Now, the fuel tank seems to loose more fuel, so you hurry to friendly base, wondering if the staff command will have enough time to call an attack on those enemy troops you just uncovered...starts to rain...

Thanks for the heads-up on the Stearman, Galway. I picked it up and found a Ju-52 and a Spitfire with a 3D cockpit. (that's pretty much essential for me since I can't much enjoy flying without one.)

Cheers,
Mike

I've been asking for this since day one of IL-2! I know the cockpit was in development by someone, but it seems to have gone very quite on the subject. It's a very simple cockpit and there are still many still in existence, particularly in the ex-Soviet Union countries. So I dont understand why it should be a big problem. I look forward to the time when we can emulate the missions of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment and get a very small insite into the experiences of those amazing "Night Witches".

I'd never join a club that would have ME as a member!!.

Collect loads of reference for the U-2 and then a modeler might have a go!
