View Full Version : Is it true abou the Mossie?

Is it true what I have heard about the Mossie's hitboxes? I understand from others that even near misses from flak will register as hits. Is this true? If so it will explain why when flying the Mossie it explodes on a reagular basis. I realize this planw was made of wood but it seems to get destroyed rather easily when you fly over a single vehiclle convoy or a 20mm AA gun. It seems like the AA is doubled in this plane.

Any confirmation on this issue would be appreciated.

Cheers!

The bug on the Mosquito is simply that there is an additional hitbox located above the right wing.

This has nothing to do with it exploding, though. It's just modeled as a very flammable and generally weak plane.

if u hit the fusealarge then it goes bang very easily too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

and flak seems tobe increadibly effective against mossies aswell http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Yes but on real mossies alot of the flak hits would pass cleanly right through the wood

I sincerely wish we had some hard data and information about this, but I don't think we'd ever convince the majority about the strength of the plane, who all just see wood = fragile.

And if we complained too much it would look churlish.

Classic catch-22.

Wood != Deltawood.
Too bad all deltawood was used up in the 40's so now we have to resort to steel and titanium and stuff :-(

Mosquito Has fuel on both sides of the engine in the wing so it must have been very dangerous flying with half tank or so when the fumes easily are ignited.

I think the exploding has to do with the fueltanks but I ofcourse can't say it should explode so easily or not.

From the many hundreds of pilots accounts I've read so far, planes seem to burn too seldom in the sim when hit in the engines and fueltanks.
I guess it must depend on that we dont have fuel and oil leaking to engine and outside on the plane and igniting?

While the Mosquitoe was made of wood, i read that this helped it to be quite durable. they were used for all kinds of actions, much of it being low ground attacks including shipping, all risking much AA and some air combat even. No where I have ever read on the Mosquitoe that they regularly blew up in action.

We know there`s a problem with the hit box and this may or may not be contributing to the Mossie blowing up way too easily. BTW, many other planes have much fuel in the wing and don`t go up like this bird so easily.

In the 21st century, they would`ve been called Multi-role aircraft.

I know it was considered less durable than the Beaufighter but AFAIK they were still reasonably sturdy IRL

The "magic hitbox" makes the Mosquito really vulnerable. When trying to find the extent of the invisible bit with the I16 (MGs only), plane would not register any damage at all, until after a few full seconds of firing where the Mosquito would explode completely.

I don't know of any other plane that will totally explode because of MGs.

Most planes can/will explode under HMG fire - not all of the time obviously! I've managed to get R10, TB3, A6m and Ki43 to explode with LMG

Actually it is not hitbox, but hidden fuselage or so. Fixed and the fix will be made public soon.

The Mossie was indeed a tough old bird. I think many people hear that it was made of wood and assume that this means solid pieces of lumber, like your average piece of furniture. It was in fact a composite of plywood laminations all bonded with an early plastic called Bakelite. This made for a very tough structure.

€œThe wooden structure was to prove extremely sturdy and resistant to gunfire, probably because wood contains its own natural crack-stoppers and because the wooden airframe had the minimum of fastener holes to generate stress concentrations.€ (Taken from Mosquito by Bill Sweetman).

The only place they didn€t do so well was in Burma I think. The intense jungle humidity did terrible things to the wood. This is partly why the beaufighter was preferred over the mossie in this theater.

It wasn't the wood that was affected by the heat and humidity. In early Mossie versions it was the glue that was affected till they went to a synthetic glue.
