Multiplayer COOP setings.
-------------------------

I love this game for it's COOP, since I'm not too good at dogfighting yet. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I joined a few COOP games last night, a few hosted by VFC Crazy Ivan. That was certainly good stuff. It's just a few things that trouble me...

First,
Noone turns the Icons on. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I mean the one that shows Friendly Planes, distance, and the persons name up to so far away.
....I know, it kills the immersion, but everyone has the option of turning them off, so I dont see why anyone would complain.
Several times last night since I cant climb as well as others, they would take off and soon fade out of sight...leaving me to have no idea where to go, and with no waypoints on the map, that doesnt make anything easier.

Second, Map icons...
Why not have the waypoints on the map?
I know you can use the Ground control, Vector to Target, Home, etc...but it cant hurt, and I dont think it takes you out of the game too much...

I just think these settings would help alot of the new guys that we have currently, myself included.
What do you guys think?

I have to agree, a lot of settings could be more newbie friendly online.

However, I found that the people are mostly helpful and friendly, they give directions and advice. And when your forced to play with these settings, well, you come to accept it and adapt.
Most games have OK settings, but there are some that have completly anal settings. The only one I try to avoid is "No external view".
When your on the runway, you cant see **** over the nose, and in real life the pilot would have a good overview before he went inside, or sticks his head out. There should however be a limited external view, that shows only YOUR plane.

Errr.. anyway, my point, Good work online folks. Keep up the good work, if we are hostile to newbies, the community will be very small.. playing with the same 5-8 people for months wont be fun.

Oh yeah... views, thanks for bringing that up.

If more COOP servers could have the external view that would help too.
Especially on carrier decks. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also, if on a COOP game, please, please, please, have the SPECTATING turned ON!!!
Please!!!
It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Boring when you crash, get shot down, captured, etc...
...and you get to see nothing but your smoldering wreckage, and dont get to watch the other players, and how their part in the mission turns out. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

...and please dont say:
"Well, thats how it would have been in real life". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Well ive flown in a bunch of the coops hosted buy the VFC* Nutjobs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif . Trust me you get used to the no icon stuff in game. Now about the waypoints, externals and minimap icons, I cant remember ever flying a vfc coop without em. The majority i fly as well at least has minimap icons and waypoints (forgive me i love the hardcore stuff as well i just am not blessed with navigation skills and good eyesight). Now about people just leaving you behind< read the briefing, take a look at the map, take your time setting up your plane, maybe you dont need a 100% fuel load ( i usually load out 100% fuel tho, Nothin more frustrating than runnin outta fuel in a good fight lol). Also learn C.E.M. (complex engine managment). There are lots of planes in this sim Each with its own optimal pitch, mixture, and supercharger settings , at different speeds, heights, etc... Youll be suprised how much you can eek outta different birds in here bud. Just keep after it and you will get as much outta it as you put into learnin it.

With externals, all you really need to do is use F6 to padlock a enemy aircraft within a 3km radius. That's why we turn icons off.

Additionally, minimap path was on - you should have been able to see your waypoints and the little white plane icon. Did you remember to zoom the map out?

Ivan has to cater to all sorts of people - I had folks last night begging me to tell Ivan to kill externals for the rest of the night.

The reason why we don't turn off externals:

1) Some folks like to watch the fights after they die (you hadn't died yet in the pony, Quint http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ).

2) Without them, the AI has a distinct advantage. Since AI has butt-O-vision, externals balance out that advantage.

Now, the reasons why we keep Icons and Map Icons off:

1) We already have external 3km radar system.

2) We have players to vector other players to the fight (via map grids).

3) Icons off puts more emphasis on identifying plane types - with external padlock, its pretty easy to find the enemies, but over time you'll learn how to identify a plane's silhouette.

Finally, you already know how to spectate with externals, right? If not, then you just use CRTL+F2 or SHIFT+F2 to cycle through external views on friendly planes.

Alternatively, with externals off, you can do a similar thing - but with the mouse. Just hold down the left mouse button (I think) and roll forward or backwards to zoom out, and look for little dots. Chances are you died in a furball, so you should be able to see plenty of action through this method.

KeenFox - theres a easy solution to seeing folks over the nose; you hold the brakes down and yaw left or right to look at the plane in front of you through the side windows. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
We have to do this all the time with 190s in locked pit.

So far, Ivan has always ran with Externals on, Minimap Path on, and Speedbar on - everything else is set to the traditional hard value.

Thanks for the reply VFC!
I will be on there again tonight, if you'll be running the server at 11:30PM.

I will check into what you said, and see if I cant get the hang of the setttings.

It's just at first it's a little daunting...what to do, where to go, who to follow, etc...

But I am getting the hang of it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I don't know if Ivan will run HOST tonight - we typically (that is, not always) run coops once a week, usually Friday. That's usually the only day we run them... Ivan doesn't make many exceptions.

Our coops are pretty much treaty in the same manner as dogfights; just go around looking for things to shoot down. It's rare for the objective to be anything else - folks don't like to do anything else. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Hi mate,
Korolov pretty much answered all your questions, so i have nothing else to add. Maybe one thing... i will try to host COOPs more then once a week. All goes well, maybe tonight even.

Cheers!

I host a weekly COOP event every Friday night at 7PM PST. If your interested in joining please click on the contact host link at the bottom right. We fly with the following settings.

Icons on
Cockpit on
External view on
Engine Management complex
Map Icons your plane only
Waypoints on
All else on

We ask that you do not use external views in combat to locate enemies (honor system).

We also use TeamSpeak 2 for voice comms. I'll give you the comm server login info after talking to you.

I run a wide range of mission types from historical to quick action style battles. Missions also are balanced between AtA and A/G attack. We are currently running PF+FB+Aces only now and concentrating mostly on Pacific theater missions.
