I arrived at my patrol grid at day 3 of my 9th patrol in my IX-C/40. After 4 days of nothing, I decided to hope on over to one of my favorite hotspots: AM17 for some action. I spend another two days of nothing when in the middle of night I received multiple contacts on my hydrophone. Sounds like another thundering heard heading for the U.K. that needed to be put to pasture. That night's weather was Clear, Light Fog, with 0 wind speed€¦ just perfect!

Lined up for a 80-100 degree Angle on Bow shot, I primed my four FAT1 torpedoes to run at 5m depth, running an initial 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000m run before all four turned back 180 degrees against the direction the convoy was heading in. At the perfect time I launched the fish, which knocked out a T3 tanker, a Liberty Cargo, gave a Troop Transport a heavy list on the bow, and knocked the screws off of a C2 Cargo€¦ all four torpedoes struck home. The celebration wouldn€t last long as the five escorts that accompanied the convoy roared into action.

I dove heading into the convoy, releasing 3 decoys (one decoy every 30 seconds) as I dived to 150m at flank speed. The escorts wasn€t fooled at all and the lead DD (a Somers Class ) decided to plop several depth charges in my vicinity. I€d run hot and crank the boat port, starboard, run silent, all stop, changed depths€¦ everything I did could not shake this DD. This €œRound-Robin€ affair lasted for about 35 minutes when I decided that I€ve had enough and I need to do something drastic.

About 300m to my southeast and at 130m deep laid the sunken hulk of the T3 Tanker that I nailed in my initial run. I wanted to see how that ship was lying and see if I could use the noise from the ship to mask my own. The T3 was cracked in half and was somehow sitting in an €œA€ shape on the sea bottom floor. It looked like a tent or teepee. So having that €œWhat If€ pop in my head I ran at head flank and squeezed my IX-C/40 in between the two pieces of the sunken tanker.

The escort went overhead and dropped his depth charges over my position, and wouldn€t you know it, the T3 that I laid to rest€¦ eventually saved my skin from pending doom. Didn€t think it would work and that it sounded too €œHollywood€, but it did.

I've done that many a time. Sometimes more successfull than others. Floating ships work too if they don't sink on you. The decoys may have failed due to the noise of the engine running at flank speed. I'v had some success with decoys when I was sneaking away..

I've become pretty good at evading DD's using decoys. The trick is to initially move fast enough to allow you to release the decoy between you and the nearest escort, then go silent. To the extent that you can keep the decoy between you and your attackers, you'll be successful in escaping.

I have a special place in my heart for all my brothers in the Department of the Navy... including the Marine Corps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

No I haven't joined the VFW because I would feel humbled and downright embarrased being around them. Meaning that they are former Army and Marine Corps ground pounders who took a bullet while under fire in either WWII, Korea, Vietnam or Desert Storm. I, on the other hand, hurt my poor little swabby back pushing a bomb. Get my meaning?
