I know a lot of these Youtube videos have been seen already but I came across this. Stop the video at 2:26 and just look at that still shot for a moment. I actually removed my ballcap in respect.

Instead of writing this on forums and starting spam, write an angry, sad letter about it and throw it away.

I would love to know how the pilot of the first shot pulled that one off, though I'm sure he didn't survive. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Still give him a 10 for sticking the landing, no disrespect in any way.

If anyone knows the cover of Mad World by Gary Jules it is pretty gut-wrenching just to listen to it by itself. I had to mute it while watching this video, but thankyou for posting, I haven't seen alot of those photos and it's a good reminder that war is indeed, hell.

For what it's worth, the opening shot of the B-24 wasn't a shoot-down. Don't remember if they were taxing or on the takeoff roll, but the pilot accidentally hit the toe brakes and stood it on it's nose. Forget how many crew died.

Not sure what link you looked at http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif but all i could see was 3 minutes of very moving photos of bombers in various states of being destroyed. My heart goes out to all those that suffered so horribly on all sides http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Quite a bit of 15th AF pictures in that slideshow. It's amazing what our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers lived through.

There were a lot of accidents that killed crews even before they crossed the channel. Take-off accidents were very dangerous since the planes were almost always heavily overloaded with bombs, ammo and gas. There were also several incidents where planes collided in mid-air, killing all or nearly all of both crews. Even sitting on the ramp could be dangerous. It was actually not that uncommon for bombs to be accidentally dropped while loading. Even though the fuses weren't armed, sometimes they did go off with the predicable results.

Good to know, was wondering how that was pulled off. I knew those birds were fairly tough but that one left me scratching my head.

Reminds me of the 617 sqn (of dambusters fame. They got very lucky when a 4000 pound cookie was dropped from a lancaster prepairing to take off.

Horrendous. Just think of the terror and pain that those guys experienced. for me, the most shocking scenes were the shot away tail gun positions. Those poor bastards did not die pleasantly.

Entirely relevant thread.

Here's a site which covers dozens of plane losses during WW2 from all nations that took place in the area where I live.

It is extremely detailed - You'll find planes, the crews, their fate, what happened before and even reunion stories... A must see.

I posted this before, but I think it fits to the topic.

The movie is very sad and heroic
but Birds of Prey's attitude in the post is a lot sadder and totally not understandable.

Thanks for posting that, I found it to be a very strong reminder of what people have endured for the sake of freedoms that we all take for granted.

I can't help but wonder if our generation would have stood up to the test as well.
