Hey guys, after much delay, I was finally convinced to get FB and Ace Expansion Pack. My first question: do I have the most current version? After getting two download patches, from another site, I'm running version 2.04 Am I current or do I need to get something else?

Also, I've got tons of new skins from the iL2Skins site, but what else do I need? Additional maps, utilities, need-to-have files? I'm figuring out how to get my X45 to work, no small task. But I'll get it.

Once I get the hang of this sim, I'll get Pacific Fighters. Thanks for your input.

Maps only come with patches, and you have the latest pre-Pacific Fighters version.

There are a few utilities out there that are nice to have. Uberdemon's Uber Quick Mission Builder is much nicer to use than the stock QMB.

If you ever dabble with any mission building, you'll want to find a printable objects list; try the Mission Builder's Forum.

That's about it, though. Pretty much just the patches are absolutely essential, and collecting skins is addicting. Anything beyond that would depend upon how you use the game and what you want to get out of it.

You werent clear as to whether or not you have Pacific Fighters. If you do not I highly recommend it. It will bring you up to FB 3.0 and make you ready for the upcoming round of patches. Go to Adlabs' site in the above link which is the same as the Sturmovik Essentials link in my sig. Lots of good stuff ther. Also look at the Practice Tips sticky. Welcome aboard and good luck.

Welcome aboard. I'm a 1-month veteran of FB (AEP) and so far I have to say it is a lot of fun as well being IMMENSELY frustrating at times. Not the game you understand, just my ability to fly/land/shoot. Taking off I find fine. I'm also pretty good at crashes, forced landings and, not wanting to boast, but I can get almost any plane you want into a flatspin http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif.
I don't know what flight-sim experience you have (this is my first) but things I found helpful:

-finally realising that 1.50 on a plane's icon means 1.5km,not 150m (Duh!I have no excuse for my dimness here. It was really, really dumb.). That was enormously helpful for my gunnery http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif. For a couple of weeks i was wondering how on earth anyone could hit something with convergence set to 3oom. I was of course looking at planes at 3km and thinking it to be 300m then saying "No way! It's impossible. I can't even see the ****ed plane!"

-using wingtip smoke in QMB to track my movements when reviewing tracks. It helped me especially when analysing my latest crashes - I could see the angle I was approaching at. It was also quite helpful for tracing my attacks. i tend to review tracks from the targets point of view to see what went right and what got my engine shot out from under me. With wing-tip smoke you can see more clearly how you are manoeuvring.Plus its real purty. Maybe that's just me though.

-using most difficulty settings. I fly with all but CEM, and icons on (and often unlimited fuel and ammo). You learn how to handle the plane quite quickly this way I think. I also like using the cockpit to make it more realistic. Cockpit mirrors are handy too. I still use externals to watch my kills go down http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif.

-staying the hell away from the FW-190s. I like the plane but sh... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif.goodness! it is hard to fly! I'm sure there are millions who swear by it and are typing their flaming responses as I write but at my level it is just a killer -snaps over really suddenly when manoeuvring, you can't even see your target in front of you due to the engine and the muzzle flash. It IS a sexy plane though and I want to learn it. It has wicked armament too. For now though I'm mostly sticking to Hurri's(Extreme_One&Poymando made a great campaign for it) and Spit's in QMB.
By the way, I've read all the stuff here saying Spits are uber and unrealistic, agents of Satan, etc, etc. I have no idea really and am not interested in tirades for or against but they do seem remarkably noob-friendly (this is a GOOD thing, in my opinion). Anyone know if this was the same in RL?

I hope some of this ramble will help you. Enjoy!

The best add-on I have for FB-AEP is Paul Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator. It is way-way better than DGEN, the campaign generator program that comes with FB (although I should admit I haven't seen the new DGEN provided with Pacific Fighters). I'm an off-line player, so having good campaigns for me is a must. Paul's program creates really good missions. You can get it here:

http://www.lowengrin.com

The latest version (2.74) is not compatible with Pacific Fighters, the new version will be.

gunnery is where its at

hint for beginners

practice gunnery in Quick Mission Builder and slow down to half or even quarter spped until you get it right .. review your attacks by playing back tracks from the targets perspective

as far as patches to the origianl FB?AEP packages go .. if you are going to get Pacific Fighters and play the combined game do not bother with FB/AEP patches they are bundled with PF
