its called World at War by a small dev team that have done a great job on it! check it out

Beside the IL-2 series and excluding FPS, I also play the following from time to time:
*Blitzkrieg and Blitzkrieg Burning Horizon
*Codname Panzers Phase 1 (Phase 2 just released but haven't bought it yet)

There are a few other WW2 flight games/sims I've got that I play (but only occasionally as the IL-2 series is tops for me):
*CFS3
*Rowan's BoB with BDG 0.98 update
*B-17 Flying Fortress Mighty 8th
*CFS2 with Australian Kittyhawk add-on

Out of these, (IMHO) Bob v0.98 and CFS2 with the add-on are the best.

Regards to all,

"Blitzkrieg", I believe, is the best WW2 tactical strategy game, and the one with most fidelity when it comes to damage/kills, relative stregths of tanks, logistics etc. The interface was also extremely easy to use.
There is now "Blitzkrieg II", but I dont like it at all - it has a new all-3D graphics engine and it looks appauling (but I also think Warcraft 3 looks appauling).
I really dont understand what's wrong with sprites and why everyone in the strategy game world wants to move to 3D. Sprites look better, and are easier to recognise on the screen as a specific object. And they can appear to have any shape possible, and are not tied down by a necessity for low polygon count, i.e. can be a zillion times less boxy than an eqivalent real time rendered 3D object.
And with 1 GB of RAM one can have so many sprites for an object that it becomes indistinguishable from it's (high number of polygons) 3D model.
Sprites are 2D image renderings of a 3D object, from a specific angle, superimposed on a backround - so for a 3D tank that can only rotate in 4 directions - you need 4 sprites, like in Dune 2/C&C/Doom. With todays ammounts of RAM one can have 512 sprites per object - and cover ALL "distinguashable by eye" angles of view, especially if you dont need to zoom in. And in a RTS game you want as many objects on a screen as possible, to keep track of the action (i.e. zooming OUT is the prefered view).
It's all Blizard's fault really. They started developing Warcraft3's engine with the idea that it should also lend itself to development into World of Warcraft, and look good zoomed IN. Then all the trendies promptly followed..for RTS.

ps. There's also Civ 4 comming out this winter; will also be 3D though..

ah man if i could get EAW to run on my PC again id play it for days on end just to get that feeling back! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif I miss that game. I play B17 mighty eighth too, good game but FMs are bit screwy. I just like the gunner positions when you have bandits all over the squadron and i like using the bombsight. Man, it feels like yesterday iwas spending hourse to learn how to use the bombsight in B17. Great game at the time. Other than those two, i play sudden strike from time to time, again just for memories. IL2/PF is constantly on in my room. Nothing touches it! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For grand strategy, try Hearts of Iron 2...you get to control any nation on the planet during the 1936-1948 time period. Economics, politics, R&D, doctrinal developments and of course military stuff. I think it retails in the US for less than $20.00 now. Just be sure to patch it up and look into various mods (I use Historic Stoney Road) as it lends to more historical outcomes and immersion.

On the tactical level, the Combat Missions series can't be beat. Titles include "Beyond Overlord" (fighting on the Western front 1944-45) "Barbarossa to Berlin" (Eastern front mayhem) and the last in the series "Afrika Korps" (North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Crete)

I play silent hunter III and for strategy I have yet to see a RTS better than the close combat series. Nothing else comes close in realism.

Hidden & Dangerous ~ Smashing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

COD - online is not very good unless you find a server that goes for the more realistic settings, otherwise its ~ Spawn~run~die~respawn~run~shoot~die~etc, looking forward to CODII

B17~The Mighty 8th...excellent, throughly enjoyed this, very good for its time, wasnt there talk of upgrading it like they have with BoB..WOV?...i'd be interested in buying this if they did

I'm ordering D-Day and Desert Rats soon, this does look good....but as for anything new, i have no idea whats in the pipeline

Ditto on the Hidden and Dangerous Monty http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif if you haven't tried this one then your missing out on a great squad based tactical sim especially with the Sabre Squadron add on.

Coop rocks its like being in one of those old ww2 movies only with Brits instead hehe

Am currently re-playing the game on Hard and trying to keep my whole squad alive is a real buzz.

Best value I have had from a game apart from Il2

H&D2 is very good but despite it's tactical bent, it's still a FPS

Silent Hunter III is quite good if you ask me. I also liked Panzer Commander a lot. Close Combat III was great fun, but my new PC refused to play it and I gave it away...

I think Blitzkrieg deserves the most applause. In terms of games where you want to simulate great battles that is.

Recently I got myself Codename Panzers and despite Graphics being stunning there are many issues. It looks like the developers didn`t really have an idea how to recreate tank battles.Afer 3hours of playing I discovered the button which enables tanks to move backwards.Game went smooth from then.
There are major issues.Like the game doesn`t let you to exploit German 88s and PzIV and V great high range cannons.Really iritating to see a tiger shooting a T34 from 20m.

"Blitzkrieg" is a 2D game that gains from Sudden Strike type games and knows how to simulate tank battles.Ofcourse,in this game too you will not be able to engage allied tanks from 1000m unseen.More like 200m but that is much better than in Codename Panzer. Also in Blitzkrieg allies have major air advantage which I think shows in the game how big role ruling the skies plays.Eitherway I liked moments when I lined up with my Tiger for an attack with a group of PzIV to see an M10 targetting me.Too late, the Tiger was lost.

I really appreciate Blitzkrieg after playing Codename Panzers.

Oh yes I forgot to say that T34 speed is horribly undermodelled.

Combat Mission series by Battlefront - Great 3D wargame. It was one of the first truly 3D wargames that grognards could enjoy. I started playing it with the first public betas.

Jane's WWII Fighters - Good gameplay, really nice graphics for the time. It's on the kids' PC in the basement and sneak down there once in a while to play it.

V for Victory by 360 Pacific - An old DOS goodie! Utah Beach/Velikie Luki/Gold-Juno-Sword/Market-Garden, plus the standalone Operation Crusader and Stalingrad games. I still play it on a Virtual PC loaded with DOS 6.22. Fullscreen 640x480 looks really weird on a 19" monitor!

CFS2 still looks good to my eyes. Nice planes, and even a flyable George.
