You are on drugs....but make do with what you have to work with...it will be a simple thing to change in FMB when the Ki-27 does appear http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
in two weeks be sure....

meanwhile you can build your missions....I am an AVG fan too so I look forward to seeing them available for the community at some point?...

Hey Chuck, you lost me on the part that says "aside from it being a biplane... LMAOROTF (laughing my rear end off and rolling on the floor.) Aside from being a completely different airplane, yep the little Italian fleabag would be a good choice <ggg.> I'm not giving you a hard time it's just that one line hit my funny bone. Still laughing, all the best, LongHorn

Actually the Falgo strikes me as being a rather bad choice. Apart from being totally different in appearance the armament is different, the view from the cockpit, the way the AC handles (since it's not a biplane) well just about anything.
The best choice IMHO would be the Val if there was some way to disable the rear gunner. The Val is rather overmodelled concerning manueverability and performance and has exactly the same armament.

I appreciate the input. Maybe I should elaborate a bit

Finkeran-

I think you're overlooking something here- the Falco is not a player flyable aircraft in the campaign. You're assuming this is online coop, I think. the game isn't just played online http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The IJA will not be represented by the player. The 3rd Squadron AVG will be, and they will fly one plane- the Hawk 81A-2. View from the cockpit and aircraft handling are not issues that I need be concerned with on the Falco.

The concern is performance. No other a/c in the game has the requisite manueverability and top speed, while also having any resemblance

using another aircraft such as the Val is not only an impossibility,as you point out, but the plane is, well...the Val, nothing else. It's bad enough I need to substitute aircraft without using an IJN divebomber to represent an IJA Fighter. The lesser of the two evils would be to use a non-Japanese aircraft

take a look at the plane list in the FMB...I've been over it dozens of times by now...there just isn't an aircraft that has all elements of the Ki-27
Let's break it into categories

1) Looks- Nothing in the sim looks like a Ki-27, not even the Val- no wheel spats on the Ki-27, and the Val is too big. The only other thing remotely possible is the I-16...and then I'd have to use more space in the campaign for custom skins

2) manueverability- several IJA planes can fit into the category- but are instantly ID'd as what they really are- confusing to call a plane a "nate" when the player knows it as a "Zero". many biplanes fit the bill, though

3) armament- twin MGs...7.7mm or 12.7 mm, the player who gets hit in the H81A-2 has the same worries.

4) availablity- the ki-27 isn't even rumored to be available soon- nor is any other a/c that looks and performs like it

If I have missed an a/c possibility for the Ki-27, please- don't keep it a secret!

The suggestion I'm considering the Falco at all
should be a tip-off that I am desperate here. My hands are tied- I cannot have the correct a/c, and the only a/c you suggest is a two-seater...which we know I can't use even if the skins were right

But this has gotten me considering the I-16 again...I'll playtest that

Longhorn- cut the upper wing off a Falco, and what does it look like? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Please don't get hung up on wing configuration in your assesment. Flying against a Falco is an experience that should mirror flying against the Ki-27 nicely. It's the game play experience I must consider as well as purely visual ones

Keep suggestions coming, I'll be checking in on and off today

Thanks for the comments so far, I'll let you know what direction I'm taking

Oh, yes. Check my "Monday Update" thread in the Mission Builders forum.

The completion date has been pushed back several times, and now I'm including tracks, but work progresses. I'm trying hard not to cut corners here, which is why I'm agonizing over the lack of the Nate

Soldier on with the Ki-43 as the "only" fighter. It may seem "boring" to you, but it was actually there, and was about as ubiquitous as the Ki-27. Either will outturn the P-40s, so it's not like you're losing a lot of capability between the -43 and -27. They both have pathetic guns, too.

I would strongly suggest although it has retractable gear using the Fiat G-50 in place of the Ki-27 till we have it...

Low H.P. & light weapons (unfortunately 12.7 vs. 7.7) yet will not handle as well as a 42 (which has the same guns as 50).

There really is no good replacement....However, you could focus your efforts more toward the tail end of their efforts...and the arrival of the new Ki-43 1a oscar, though that is where the tide started to slip back toward the Japanese again.

I'm looking forward to this one.
Too bad there isn't a Nate, but I think substituting 1 AC for another detracts from the immersion. I just spent a week redoimg this scheme of a Burma Oscar. You can use it if you want.

Chuck, I'm with Billfish here. The G50 is a better choice, simply because it is a monoplane.

And waddaya mean the Ki27 didn't have spats?

Wow, never saw a pic with wheel spats on a Nate!

I-16 looks too odd

maybe the G50...I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for the suggestion!

Plenty of Ki-43s in the campaign, be sure http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

They were often removed for service in muddy/winter conditions, or to simply make servicing easier in general, but I think they are cool....

Looking forward to your campaign.

Won't the claude A5M be a historically accurate candidate for your campaign when it comes out? (just guessing, i don't know for sure) might want to wait for that one. just a thought.

I hope you post when you finish it, i would love to give it a fly.
S!

By the time I finish, we might have a Burma Map for BoB http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Come on, El, Nates are 'targets', not 'aircraft' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

heywoood- oh yes, the campaign will be available- check Mission Builders forum http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Box Weasel- Wow that skin is gorgeous! I would like to keep skins down to a minimum. let me see how big the finished campaign is- I have four tracks and about 30 missions, with two skins right now. I don't want it to be an 8 MB download.

can you give me some info on what unit had that scheme and when and where they were in Burma? If possible, I would like to use it if I can find the room http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif As for substitute aircraft...the dearth of IJA airplanes make that a necessity, I'm afraid. For instance, the SB 2M-103 is standing in as the Kawasaki Ki-48. It's a nice fit; much of the Ki-48 was based on the SB 2M-103. Also, another IJA bomber is being represented by a Russian aircraft. Nothing I can do about it, there's no choice http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif without them, the campaign is boring- just fly, fight the figters, come home, rinse, lather, repeat

G.50 is way too tough...I just pumped one full of lead and the engine finally quit...that won't be my Nate

Looks right now like it's just the Ki-43.

Thanks for all your input, it's best to get opinions other than your own sometimes- sometimes you get to be less than objective! You folks are keeping me 'honest'

Box Weasel- Is that skin from headquarters Chutai, 77th Sentai?

If so, it's a 1943 skin...AVG disbanded July 4th, 1942. I may not be able to use that after all http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Do you have any others from 1941 up to July '42?

Box-weasel
01-22-2005, 07:09 PM
I think it is 1943, either 77th or 248th Sentai.
I've heard it called both. But you're right, too late for this.
I could repaint it without the Sentai marks (no stripes or tail markimgs, plain red hinomarus)if you like.

Are you going to make a PF Standalone compatible campaign? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

This is a bit OT but have you tried the Rufe campaign, its completely impossible, in the first mission it's 3 rufe fighters versus about 16 american fighters. I've tried playing this mission about 10 times and just get shot down every time, it wouldnt be so bad if the Rufes had decent manouverability but as it stands it simply cant be done. can anyone prove me wrong?

I'm sorry, but I don't have PF installed stand-alone. I wouldn't know how to make a stand-alone version.

My little campaign notwithstanding, PF installed as an add-on to FB and it's upgrades is a much more complete package than PF stand-alone, and it's not expensive to get the FB Gold Pack. I recommend the merged install strongly

I would be delighted to use that skin! You will receive full credit of course if you choose to make it available for the campaign

Ah grampa, you're desperate, aren't you? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Don't desperate: even if Nates are not in, they're planning to have AI Claudes, that are a better susbstitute.

Pity we can't experiment with Ki-27 legendary FM turn skills.
