Or at least that´s what the folks from The Inquirer claim here:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=23594

I think the most interesting bit for us flight simmers is this one:

"The game that will benefit the most is Lock on: Modern Air combat where you will be able to see an incredible fifty per cent performance increase just by installing a new 5.6 Catalyst driver."

Hope we get similar performance boosts in PF.

Good stuff.

If only it had a flat head to hold my beer and turned into a pizza afterward. Then it would be perfect.

We shall see.

Sweet.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Lets hope PF also gets a performance boost with this new driver update as well, even if it's not mentioned.

I'll wait and see what Hunter82 has to say before using them but this does sound mighty tasty.

If only Nvidia could do the same.

Well, I´ve been constantly gaining from 1 to 2 FPS avg in the BlackDeath track since the Cat 5.2s release till the current 5.5s, so I see no reason why the new ones would let me down.

Hell, even if I gain only one more FPS avg with the 5.6s without image quality loss, I´ll be more than satisfied.

I hear that the Cat 5.6's will not only increase length, but girth as well.

Is there a way to use these new drivers if one is using a ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 laptop graphics card? I have never used any other drivers than those loaded on my laptop when I purchased it. Might be nice to reap some benefits of new drivers.

Hopefully performance increase applies to version 1.02 - I haven't bought the new version yet.

From the ATI web site:

"ATI Mobile Graphics products in notebooks

Display drivers and multimedia applications for notebooks with ATI graphics solutions are available for download from your Notebook manufacturer.

For your convenience, a list of links to notebook manufacturers is available in the ATI Onboard section of our website.

The display driver supplied with a given notebook has been customized for:

* the built-in flat panel display
* any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer.

As a result of these customizations, ATI Customer Care is unable to offer drivers for notebooks.
We recommend that you:

* use the driver supplied with your notebook computer, or,
* obtain a driver update from the manufacturer of your notebook computer.

Support for a specific driver feature (such as hardware acceleration of OpenGL) may be incorporated into a particular display driver (or not) at the discretion of the notebook manufacturer. If you have any questions regarding the features or functionality of a particular display driver, please consult with your notebook manufacturer.

For more information on ATI graphics solutions which are used in notebook systems, please see the Mobile Solutions page."

Im dowloading the 5.5 drivers now. I have 5.1 drivers.

Question, do the drivers increase performance via frame rate or is ram the central issue, re the card 512 mb

Chances are it only helps out with shaders and stuff not sheer video performance so I doubt PF will get much of a boost. The water is DX9 so it's possible.

Try this little test I learned about when working on a tech support desk years ago....
1. check FPS before driver upgrade.
2. Upgrade drivers and check FPS.
3. Rename game exe to something.exe for example, then check FPS again.

It has been known for results at steps 2 and 3 above to give different results. Three guesses as to what's actually going on where results at steps two and three are different.

I've had a substancial loss of FPS using 5.x drivers compared to 4.x, if they manage to get back to their old level with 5.6 I am happy.

I have actually gone back to 4.10 as the later cats cause graphics problems on a lot of my young son's games.Moral of the story=Build another system to run PF on http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Since I installed the 5.6 version, in perfect mode, outside the cockpit is all black. But in excellent mode, its ok. It never did that before I installed the 5.6. Any suggestions will be greatlly appreciated.

Makes me wonder where you downloaded the 5.6's from! When I read your post I immediately ran to http://www.ati.com to download them, only to find that they weren't yet available.

BTW: I've had the same "blackness" since the 5.xx cat's anyway....Perhaps try fiddling in the conf.ini with the water=x settings....

And to JG52Uther: install the 5.xx cat's to your sons computer and then force him to play PF! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Guess you were lucky then: a couple of hours later they were on the ati.com site......downloaded them immediately and running them now.....
They "feel" smoother but I haven't really crunched the numbers yet

You forgot about the big ears, just don't pull on em too hard or you might spill your beer.

I just updated and it doesnt work as good as i had hoped. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gifBut maybe thats because i have an older ATI Radeon 9250 card that I got last fall. I was running everything near or at excellant . Now i must retweak everything to find the best FPS. Was averaging between 30 to 40 on most maps online with some spikes in the 80's http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thats typical of all cards...gotta retweak with new drivers and major new additions to games.
