Are we allowed to shoot our Watch Officer for being stupid? I am on the surface in broad daylight, attacking a convoy. I have sunk the escort and everyone else who was shooting back at me. For the last 90 minutes I have been having a hell of a good time running on the surface between columns, using torpedos and deck guns (even the flack) and raising hell in general. All at once, my Watch Officer makes the announcement "we've been spotted". Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Helen Keller knew we were out there for the last hour and a half, what the hell is he thinking?

Sounds like you must have signed-on the same Watch Officer that I sacked on return to Wilhelmshaven at the end of my last patrol!!!
Talk about stating the bleedin' obvious, eh?

On my last patrol, I was also informed "enemy is pinging us, Sir", as we were hit by about 4 DCs from a Hunt III destroyer that had been after me for a couple of hours! Finally managed to shake him off with 42% HI left and 3 dead crew.

regards,

The game adjusts the viewing distance according the the weather conditions. Visually you'll be able to see a ship at ~2x the distance than the watch crew can. This is with a very experienced crew as well.

Also sounds like you're in easy-mode ??

It's just a game 'bug', for want of a name..

I'm not sure that it's easy mode, playing at 60 something percent realism. In any case, it's daylight, flat calm sea, clear as a bell, spotted the convoy at about 7 kn, now working in ranges of 4-500 meters so while your info might be correct in general, I still think he must have been down in the crapper or something.

If you took any damage, he might have been able to spot it from a hole in the hull when he was using the head...

Yes,
I surfaced in a harbour one day and spent a good half hour shelling every ship I could see. On my way out of the harbour, my watch officer informed me that we had been spotted.
This doesn't have much to do with realism settings I think, as I play on 100% and it still happens. It doesn't happen all the time but the more tired the crew gets, the more they tend to do these things.
Next time you end a mission, when you are handing out qualifications, give the watchman qual' to another officer so you can swap them around and lessen the fatigue.

Of course there is the "we may have been detected" announcement while we are being bracketed by many depth charges and the pinging is going through us like knives.
I understand why we do not have a P38 or Luger in our locker just for these brilliant deductions.

Yeah, I've put a couple of morons off at the docks before & got better qualified/skilled crew to replace them. That helps, but it doesn't eliminate every instance. I've noticed this type of behaviour happening more with "plane spotted".
