cawimmer..small corrections...Croatian ace Mato Bubovak is actually Mato Dukovac (44 kills not 34 as Cvitan Galic has 38 not 36))..Benetictic is actually Ljudevit Benetic..Stipic is actually Zlatko Stipcic...Fanjo Dzal is actually Franjo Dzal...Kauzlavic is Kauzlaric...Boskic is Stjepan Boskic...you forgot to put Josip Hellebrant (12 kills) and some other croatian aces..

cheers

TX-Gunslinger, Thanks for that link.

I found it amazing ( of the pilot's kill stats that reported altitudes ) how many fighters were taken out at relativley low altitudes.

Good links guys. Also some of these guys didn't scored/flew only during their service in axis armies, they had some time/kills in allied forces as well. It would be interested to see some numbers about their axis/allied kills as well. I can not specify here but I have read about it...

If you are interested in Axis pilots, get a real book like "A Pair of Aces: Graf and Grislawski" by Christer Bergstrom. Bergstrom gets into the details of their pilot careers and tries to match up the claims with loss records. One of the "pair" had a bit of a rep for "claim inflation", but both were clearly expert pilots who achieved incredible results. Those internet lists of kills are, sadly, not very meaningful other than to indicate that the pilot was experienced and survived a lot of missions. As a rule of thumb, if the action happened over friendly territory, subtract 25% from the total. If it happened over enemy territory, subtract 50% from the total. The more chaotic the action, the higher the rate of overclaiming, you just can't verify a kill when your head is on a swivel trying to stay alive. This applies to aces of all nations. Also, certain desperate situations seemed to exaggerate overclaiming. The overclaiming by the LW seems to have shot way up the last 6 months of the war. In the same way, the VVS seemed to have a lot of claims in '41 that are hard to verify in loss records.

Great links guys thanks!

Am I right in thinking that the German way of calculating kills is different from the Allies?

How else is there to explain UK/US pilots only scoring around 20 as the max whereas the germans have 100+ in many cases? I remeber something about a German 'Victory' being different but am not sure how its oconnected, can you guys enlighten me?

No different way of calculating.

Allied pilots often flew a tour and then were sent back to train other pilots or some other duty. German pilots had no such luxury since they were losing. If you compare the kills per sortie for top scorers of all nations you will see similar rates of success. Some examples:

Erich Hartman 1404 missions 352 kills 1 kill per 3.98 missions

Robert Johnson 92 missions 27 kills 1 kill per 3.4 missions

Ivan Kozhedub 326 missions 62 kills. 1 kill per 5.2 missions

The Germans also had a target rich environment whereas the Allies saw fewer German aircraft as the war went into its later stages.
