What's a safe distance in order to avoid merchant detecting you with different kinds of visibility?
I try 5 km when it's moderate...

I usually attack at night. If you are decks awash, not moving and facing the merchant (as if, not showing him your broadside), you can be reasonably safe about 800m away. In wavy conditions, they may have trouble spotting you at 500m.

That being said, this is only safe to do in early war. Once merchants get armed, sitting at 0 knots 800m away is a quick trip to the bottom.

I don't think it is possible to 'second guess' a merchant's spotting distance. I've been ignored in broad daylight more than once and, conversely, been shot at at night and in poor weather.

The following was the spookiest encounter I ever had with a merchant...
